    Default NUVI 205W Bricked

    Hi
I have a Nuvi 205W that is somewhat bricked. I was trying to install maps through
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
and followed those instructions. I backed up the img file to my computer, deleted the old img file and tried to copy the new one onto the device. Well, it seems that the device does not recognize that additional space is now available on the device, as the device's available capacity never decreased so I could not add the new img file (no space which is ridiculous). So, using what I thought was logic, I copied all my files from the device to the SD card in the device (plenty of room there) and then formatted the device as a FAT drive.
Now the device will not mount, the SD card will not mount and I have an expensive piece of plastic where the GPS used to be.
I am running UBUNTU 14.04 and yes, I know Garmin does not support Linux (they should, they really should) but the device will not even be recognized now (it was before), never mind mount. I did get the device into preboot mode and got so far as to get into the menu icons which seem to work except when it needs to find data that was on the device. That is as far as I got, I noticed some threads talking about storage mode but when I tried to go through those procedures, it did not seem to work for my device.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Formatting the nüvi with the built-in Windows tool will not work. The proper way to format your nüvi is described in this procedure: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Thanks, great info for a Windows system but again, I am running Linux Ubuntu 14.04 and this procedure would only work with Windows or if I was running WINE (which I am not). My guess is either get a Windows platform to try this or just get a new device that supports Linux (if there is one). I will look for something like this and post my results here if I find one.

As pointed out in the excellent tutorial to which you were given a link, you need to format in a way that Garmin devices will universally accept. Firstly, for nuvi 2x5 devices that's FAT32 only for the internal flash. Secondly, it will read either FAT16 or FAT32 formatted SD cards but not NTFS or exFAT SDXC.

So, being as there are as many ways to format in FAT as there are ways to skin a cat and Garmin is picky you are best to only use RMPrepUSB with a PC for internal formats. Anything else is a lottery, even the inbuilt Windows format tool maybe won't do the job to Garmin's satisfaction.
