Default Garmin 2689 LMT - Europe map download.

Here's my problem - I'm an absolute newby as I stated in my member's presentation . I have a 2689LMT bought in Oz. I want to put Europe NT 2016.20 on it but I'm totally confused so I hope someone can help. I've tried searching but it hasn't seemed to help me probably due to my lack of basic knowledge.

I have downloaded a map that looks like the screen shot in the europe thread, but I've read that the 2689 can't recognise unlocked maps. I would just buy the map, but it won't have lane assist or junction view, (both will help me on major highways).

Is it worth me continuing to plow through the information to use this map set on my device? Or do I just give up? I have to tell you, the thought of giving up after all this time is not appealing.

Do I need specific ASR, G2s, JCV files for my 2689? Where do I get them from the forum?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
sorry but you have to patch firmware if you want unlocked EU maps in your nuvi.
It seems a bit complicated for a newbie but it's not, just follow with care instructions and read linked threads.

You can see which files you need in garmindevice.xml in nuvi Garmin folder

G'day again Geoff. No wuccas, we'll take it slow to keep the confusion factor low.

Go to the patcher thread as said by catymag and as smokefree suggested in your MP thread [3 times proves it right? ]. Read the initial post carefully there, if you don't understand anything ask in that thread or post again here. If it gets totally beyond you i'll make the patched firmware for you but we'd rather you did it yourself, you're going to have to flash it manually as an RGN file anyway which is the harder part.

Once we've got that sorted we'll work on the map and additional files. There are more of those additional files available for your 2689 for the Unicode version [NTU] EU than there is for the 'non-unicode' NT EU.

So, step at a time mate. Just don't stress, we'll get there. I'm as thick as two short planks and somehow even i've learnt how to do this sort of stuff.

    Hi again Geoff,

Your thoughts are a natural response to the amount of information available on the forum. We all do recognise that stage of the learning process. I compare it to trying to drink from a wide open fire hydrant: you do get some water in, but most of it goes past you. All I can say is not to give up! As Neil says, it's not as difficult as it seems. And what's at least as important: you're in good hands here! Hang in there Mate and follow instructions step by step. Don't run before you can walk and I'm confident this thread can be marked "Solved" soon!

Thanks for the support Guys - I appreciate it.
I have now followed the instructions (from somewhere?) and have GUPDATE_Patched GCD and GUPDATE_Patched.rgn and updater.exe in my system folder.
I tried to enter pre-boot mode about 20 times, finally I pressed over the battery symbol and the model number appeared briefly in updater. When I pressed 'okay' a message "could not find file path F: system/ GUPDATE Patched .rgn and a message from windows telling me there is something wrong with my drive. (I reckon there's still something wrong with the operator! But we'll get passed that)

Copy Updater.exe in a directory along your firmware.rgn, drag the .rgn in Updater.exe icon, Updater.exe will open, tick USB.
Means a directory on your PC not in nuvi.

Cheers catymag, so I copied the GUPDATE_PatchedGCD and GUPDATE_Patched RGN on to my desktop, opened updater and got an error message to send to Garmin (I didn't).

Geoffrey! If you don't sit up straight and start paying attention i'm going to ring your Mum, so listen up:

Read this post and the couple preceding it before you do anything further: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. In your case, the RGN file should be named 194801000781.rgn because you reported you have V7.80 firmware loaded. So do the SW Version override as explained in that post #180, but to 781. Read the notes at base of this post and if all confirmed now follow this:

    1. Ensure you've removed gupdate.gcd from the unit's .System folder. Note that gupdate.gcd may not be present but must be removed if it is.

    2. Drag 194801000781.rgn onto Updater.exe and enable the radio buitton to the left of 'USB Device' in Updater's GUI. Leave it visible for the rest of this procedure.

    3. Plug a suitable USB cable into a REAR port of your PC.

    4. Hold the upper LH corner of the device screen firmly and plug the other end of the usb cable into the nuvi which will power it on. Watch the GUI closely.

    5. Immediately you see the device's details appear in the window to the right of 'USB Device' press 'OK' on Updater's GUI or just hit Enter key on your keyboard.

    6. Keep holding the screen at least until 'Software Loading' or similar message appears, or hold until the whole process finishes to be sure.

    7. Disconnect nuvi from PC and let it boot normally.

    Notes:
Things to be absolutely sure of first. Look at your 'Inventory' page to double-check HWID and SW Version. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Top line should read 'Boot BLK B1948-00 780' [HWID; Firmware version].

The reason to increase the SW Version by .01 is in case we might need to 'fool' the unit to accept the apparently same Version, i.e. As Jotne found with his 2699 it may refuse to reflash another V8.20 file but happily accepted V8.21.

Okay, I've had another go. I created a folder and followed the instructions to the point where I start in pre-boot mode. I get the model number in Updater, press Okay. At this stage I get a message saying
    "Garmin device is not responding":
    1. Make sure Garmin Device interface option set to GARMIN or host mode
    2. cable connected
    3. turned on
The unit has power, because at this stage Garmin Express opens.
    How am I doing?

That means it lost preboot mode and entered Mass Storage Mode. Most units only stay in preboot for a limited time so you need to do this stuff very quickly. Also if you release the pressure on the screen even a fraction too soon it will drop out too, hold it until the flash finishes if you can and at least until 'Software Loading' or such appears.

There is another way to enter a type of preboot mode where the unit will maintain the state indefinitely but i'm unsure if it will work with these very new models. Let's try though: Simply go to the first screen 'SW Ver' of hidden menu behind the battery symbol, no need to press any further or hold the screen, do 1 to 3 as in Post#8 above and then just connect the usb and see if the device details show next to 'USB Device' in Updater's GUI, if it shows then press 'OK' or hit enter key. All that can be done quite leisurely. If that doesn't work, then try this:

Do 1 to 3 then proceed like this for 4: Turn on the unit, immediately the 'Garmin' logo appears press and hold the upper LH corner of the screen firmly [easier to use your left thumb for that rather than a finger btw], then immediately plug in the usb cable to the unit. Then do 5 to 7 as above. Everything must be done very quickly with that method too.

PS: You've confirmed your HWID is 1948 and SW Version [firmware version] is V7.80 like i asked, did the SW Version override to 781 and named the RGN properly too, didn't you?
