Not that kind of 'cactus' Tex. Anyway the so-called 'Tequila Cactus' is not a cactus, it's the Blue Agave. As such it's more closely related to lilies than cacti. All 3 are are Angiosperms [flowering seed producers] but true Cacti are of the clade Eudicots whereas Agaves and Lilium are both Monocots. In fact, the agave is even more closely related to Asparagus because both are in the family Asparagaceae ... but i digress.

The Oz slang 'cactus' means broken, dead, useless, wrecked [i.e totally stuffed!]. Pretty much synonymous with the more universal 'hosed' which i should have used. We will sometimes dress it up a bit tongue-in-cheek as 'cactus rootus' to give it a faux Latin sound, but don't even get me started on the last part 'cos rather than making the 2 word term more suitable for genteel polite mixed company it makes it much, much worse.

As an aviation enthusiast, i have always found it amusing that US Airways chose 'Cactus' as their designator [Qantas is just 'Qantas', British Airways is 'Speedbird' or Birdseed according to Aussie ATCs with a sense of humour] and the designator Cactus was blissfully unwittingly requested by US Airlines and approved by ICAO, both. To Aussies, an airline designator meaning broken, dead, useless, wrecked etc is a big laugh. Not so funny listening to the tape of the transmission between ATC and Cactus 1549 before the jet-less jockeys safely got that A320 glider onto the Hudson in one piece [pity they never got far enough into the ditching procedure to close the bungs or it'd have floated forever] .... Ok, i digress again. Are you now sorry you mentioned 'cactus' Tex?
Ask woteva ya want about the 255W mate, i know more about them than any cactus.

Thanks for the wiki professor; but I know what "cactus" means. That's why the quotes around it in my replied. Sorry for leaving out j/k. My 255W arrived and I'm disappointed. First simulated route and it locked up. Checked firmware version and it's 6.70? With NA2011.10 map!

Umm.. so Oz slang has spread and even to TX, at least the Cactus call sign is dead too now with the merger or the guys at Dallas Fort Worth hub would've been unhappy i reckon if aware of the slang. Betcha didn't know about 'cactus rootus' though . No need to thank me for the 'wiki', i'm only too happy to educate you 'Yanks' [j/k Tex].

I'd reset the 255W and update it to V7.80, it'll be ok they're a tough unit. There's no 'clear nonvol' function available, but if you keep having trouble downgrade to a lower firmware which will force a more comprehensive reset. If it's HWID 0827 you can flash it to 465 to get LA, or Asian to additionally get JCV but TTS is not perfect.

It might be an OZ slang, but common sense from reading your post tell me cactus=dead. Ok, I want to upgrade to 7.80 per
    Code:

but I don't want to mess with "Garmin Express" so I need to get
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
Then what do I do next? Convert to .rgn or can I upgrade from the .gcd directly? Do I backup it up first? How do I find HWID? Isn't one of your 255W running Asian FW?

Might have to spin this off somewhere, my fault for OT/flooding, but hey, wot's new?

All this is assuming your 255W IS the non-MTK HWID 0827. You can see it in GarminDevice.xml, look for "<PartNumber>006-Bxxxx-00</PartNumber>" to check that 'xxxx' is 0827. If it's 1091 you'll need the MTK firmware and you can't convert to US 465 or any Asian fw. You can also see it on the unit, press and hold the battery symbol near top RH corner of the main screen to reach hidden menu > Next > Start Test > More to see 'Inventory' page. Look at top 3 lines, second entry "Bxxxx-00".

So if you have the non-MTK chip, you can also get 0827 fw from
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
[To see how i found that, right-click on the page from your post's Garmin link above, choose 'view page source' or similar to open a new window then look for the GCD link near the top].

I much prefer to not use gcd files, even though they only present a slight risk of bricking. Several ways to do it with a gcd:
    • After connecting the nuvi to PC in MSM, drag nuvi2x5W_GCDFile__780.gcd onto WebUpdater.exe or it's shortcut icon and that will transfer it as gupdate.gcd to the Garmin folder; or
    • Rename nuvi2x5W_GCDFile__780.gcd to gupdate.gcd, hook up the nuvi in MSM then drop it into the unit's Garmin folder; or
    • Place gupdate.gcd on an SD card in Garmin folder [x:\Garmin\gupdate.gcd], turn nuvi off, insert card, turn nuvi on.

I prefer to use preboot. Make the gcd into an rgn file with RGN_Tool and name it 082701000780.rgn, drag it onto Updater.exe and flash in the usual way.
Or, you could look in the Tutorials ... it's all in there.

Three of my 255Ws are running SG/MY at present, versions 2.50, 2.80 and 3.00. If you want to try An asian conversion don't flash the full fw. Only make a hybrid fw, using the US boot.bin and keep the HWID as 0827.

PS: The only really worthwhile back up of a 2nd hand unit initially is of region 41 [for older unit like 2x5 use "rrgn,41,1:/41.bin"]. That's the commonly called 'NV backup': [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

EDIT: Ok dude, ya got your own thread so knock y'self out. Prof Neil's wiki service is now live 24/7. Advice worth every dime! [All advice is free, no care taken and i can't even spell respuns ... err.. reponserbil ... ]

Yes it's the Mediatek chip model so you can't do any conversions sorry. That's now the correct file to use for it, make the rgn from the gcd as i said, drag it onto Updater.exe, select the radio button next to 'USB Device' then connect the unit in pre-boot mode [not Mass Storage Mode]. To do that, turn nuvi off, hold the upper LH corner of the screen with your thumb, plug in usb lead which will fire up the unit. Keep holding the screen, when you see the device details appear in the window next to 'USB Device' press 'OK' on Updater's GUI or just hit Enter key on kb. Hold the screen at least until 'Software Loader' or similar appears on the unit's screen then let go. Make sure there's plenty of charge in the battery before you start, and make sure to do the nonvol backup and also reset it first.
Who told you about the LA Swamp Folk curse on the Tutorial Index?

Swamp folks? Gator heads is probably better. Actually Silicon Bayou is nickname of the area Nuvi255w internal disk space is 1.8GB, NA2016.10 map is 2.4GB; how is Garmin planning to update it? Is a new Nuvi 55LM for $80 a good deal?

Ok, my Nuvi255W GarminDevice.xml has the following entries
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
If I do update via preboot, does it changes it to reflect the new info?

"There's no 'clear nonvol' function available, but if you keep having trouble downgrade to a lower firmware which will force a more comprehensive reset."
So how do I "reset" the unit? And this is done after I backed up rgn41 (before Updating?) Do I reset after updating as well?

If you want all NA use a min 4GB SD in the 255W.

I wouldn't buy a 55LM [no traffic], you maybe can get an LMT for not much more but $80 is cheap for a new 55LM.

The ref to gupdate.cgd in the xml is only showing it's correct path, i.e. it goes in the Garmin folder, it doesn't mean there is one there. If you do have a GCD file onboard for V6.70 be sure to remove it before you flash V7.80 in preboot. Name the RGN file only 109101000780.rgn.

Reset by holding the lower RH corner and powering on. Keep holding screen until the prompt to clear all user data appears. Reset both before and after updating software is always safest. Do the 41 backup asap.

P.S. How ya off fer undies and sox?
