help Garmin custom map tiling software

    Hello!

Let me start by saying that I checked Google, searched the forum and Garmin tutorials page but did not manage to find a good answer.

So... when making Garmin custom maps from jpg files (usually scanned old paper maps) - I use image overlay in Google Erath , calibrate, export to kmz etc - but then I have to use a program to split the (usually) large map into tiles to see on my Garmin Montana.

I haven't done this in a while and now I see that Okmap software that I used is not free anymore

Any other free programs to simply split a jpeg/kmz custom map into tiles?

    Thank you

How big is your JPEG map? Do you try to use JNX format for Montana?

    free

I do not use JNX format at all; Just a large jpg image overlay (more than 3MB) that I need to cut into tiles of less than 3 MB.

Here is a link to Garmin limitations:
    Code:

So as you can see I need to have maximum 500 jpg /KMZ and 3MB maximum size of each tile.

Later edit: I have found a free program just for map tiling called KMZFactory - it's very basic and the interface is spartan but it gets the job done ... and FREE

Use free JNX and you will be free from all limitation!

number of levels of detail: JNX up to 5 KMZ - only one
number of tiles: JNX - up to 50000 per level KMZ -max. 100 per device (!), up to 500 in Montana
subjective rendering speed: JNX - high KMZ - low
supported image type: JNX - any type KMZ - Jpeg
image size: JNX - up to several Gb KMZ - 3MB

Thanks for the info. I will look into JNX files but from what I see they require changing Garmin firmware to work on device.

One advantage however of jpg/KMZ combination is that they are very easy to make in Google Earth, work in any device without any changes to firmware.

In any case you need to update device from time to time! I do not force to use JNX to you, but for me it is the significant improvement of Garmin device.
