Default GPS V and City Select maps

I have a GPS V (old handheld unit) and maps (City Select V6.01 last update 2004) for the Lower 46 states. I recently acquired newer GPS V and am having issue with map locking and newer unit. Installed Mapsource on 64b Win7 computer. Installed maps and used unlock tool to unlock map in Mapsource. Tried to unlock using PGFT 2.2.5.4 all img files needed XOR operation most then reported unlock( had two different msg about img errors) but after sending to "new" GPS V unit still reports maps are locked. Tried jetmouse but not sure what FID is or how to get it. last issue is it takes 1000 img files to map the lower 48 so being able to let software work on all img files is a plus.

To unlock map in Mapsource use
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
    to unlock an img use
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Both should work with ancient City Select

Additionally, probably it can use 'non-NT' OF [Old Format] City Navigator, can't see why not but your risk of course bicycl. Latest OF CN for NA is 2009: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Would give you an extra 5 years of updated map data.

Catymag how do I get gimgunlock to XOR the img file?

Nei Thanks for tip, as long as img files are less than 29 meg I can use the newer map. total GPS V internal memory is about 28-30 meg and no add-on memory capability.

The old City Select and OF City Navigator img files shouldn't be XOR'ed i think. In such a case, gimunlock.exe will prompt you to use gimxor.exe if needed:

I've read your initial post again, it seems you were trying to unlock the numbered .img files in the City Select PC installed folder. If so, i hope you now realise that it's the compiled *.img file which is sent to the device which can be unlocked with gimgunlock [or PGFT which has the original version gimunlock as it's .img file unlock engine anyway]. If you are still confused on this matter, post again then Caty or i will post a step-by-step. Briefly, you may need to send the img file to a media card from MapSource or MapInstall initially and then transfer it to the GPS using [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. With such an old unit and OF map you should only need a [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] unl code added to unlock the map for the GPS.

Good catch Neil, I did not know there were compiled vs. uncompiled img files. What I am having trouble with is what can I send the compiled maps to, and how do I convince Mapsource to send it there? Or is that why I need the patched Mapsource version?

Yes, i though that may have been the case. Sorry that error has labeled you as somewhat inexperienced so we'll spoon-feed you a bit but you'll need to do some catch-up self-education regardless. First a bit of background explanation, also in answer to your question: With the patched versions of MapSource and MapInstall you can send an image also to your PC's hard drive. Don't worry too much about that, it's not hard to send the image file initially to a media card/usb stick, then from there to the PC and then load from the PC to the GPS, only one extra tiny simple step saved. You can use the patched versions to send it to an IDE/SATA HDD if you want, but we don't need to 'convince' MS or MI to send where we want really.

Please have a read of the tuts/threads for MS & MI to get your head around sending to a media card firstly, then we'll step you though loading to the device. Some homework for you [pay attention, there may be a snap test later ]:

    • So start again with a fresh PC installed version of whichever map you wish to work with, either your 2005 City Select or the 2009 CN, unlock it with [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] as said earlier by Caty. [Or if you only unlock it with JetMouse for MS use that may be sufficient for your older unit and maps unaffected by GMA].
    • Start with a clean media [microSD/SD/usb stick], either leave it empty or create a root folder named Garmin [nothing else on it] then connect it directly to a usb port [preferably rear of PC]
    • Use either MS or MI to select the map tiles to send to the media, up to your unit's limit [~29 MB ain't gonna get you a big area sorry but you'd know that]. If you're familiar with MS already just stick with it as there's no problem using it for those old maps, it only gives glitches with modern NT mapping.
    • The map image will be sent as gmapsupp.img to the media's Garmin folder which will be created if it's not on it already
    • Copy the file somewhere convenient of your PC, Desktop will do
    • Unlock gmapsupp.img with [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] as Caty suggested before [or, if you're familiar and comfortable with the old procedure you can use a JM generated unl code. If you're not, just use gimgunlock]
    • If you've got your head around using [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] to erase existing detail mapping and send the img file to the device then carry on with that, if not then post again after reading that thread and we'll take you through it.

Ask if unsure of any point, but read the tuts and threads carefully first. Some of the above is 'either/or' for old units and mapping, but won't hurt to do both [i.e. unlocking twice won't cause issues]. Good luck. [Jeez you're fortunate we like Texans mate! ].

Still having a problem with getting the gmapsupp.img to the GPS after unlocking. I generate the gmapsupp from mapsource and send it to the usb stick, unlock it no problem. I start sendmap20, try to add map, but map does not show in window. What am I doing wrong?

You need to add the map image to Sendmap GUI's drag'n'drop panel. Connect your GPS by USB then follow this as a guide:

    Send Map20 Nisl

Step 1 works as expected, maps are erased (have sent locked maps and they go poof!)
Step 2 does not work. Drag and drop and nothing appears in the window. tried add maps and nothing appears in the window. I can add maps from the uncompiled folder, but have tried making gmapsupp all caps, or lower case nochange. tied changing map name no change. Tried moving to different directory, no change.
    Step 3 no problems
step 4 works if there is a map showing in window from step 2 . Have been able to send locked to GPS to verify maps are on GPS and to verify step 1 works.

I was hoping you could tell me why I am having trouble with step 2 with the gmapsupp.img file and Sendmap20.
