update:
There's a new firmware update for this unit v4.40 and 3rd party maps don't work at all with this one.I still haven't found a way around it. Just a heads up!
Probably no workaround anymore this time:

Has anyone been successful in loading custom maps on Garmin Gpsmap 7610 or similar
Trying to use custom maps generated with gpsmapper and sendmap in the new 2015 marine chart platters. The custom maps are on sd card with a lock key based on the unit ID number. When I plug in the chip, the unit recognizes the map but a message stating " THE MAP FORMAT IS NOT SUPPORTED" is displayed on screen. Below is the data from the GarminDevice.xml file. Anyone run into this problem. Have used this method for the past several years without any problems.
-<Model>
<PartNumber>006-B2101-00</PartNumber>
<SoftwareVersion>230</SoftwareVersion>
<Description>echoMAP 74sv, US Offshore</Description>
I think custom Charts will only work with the following Garmin Plotters:
GPSMAP 400/500/600/700/1000/4000/5000/6000/7000 Series.
Garmin Plotters with a software version higher than 2015.02.02 will not be compatible.
As stated for example from this vendor about Navionics charts.
Changelog probably is this one:Code:http://www.bluewaterweb.com/p-51723-gar-905sc-msd-us-mid-atlantic-canyons-sonar-char.aspx
Changes made from version xx to xx: Changes to support manufacturing.
The only way (if possible) is to downgrade fw.
Read info linked in post n 24.
