Probably best you re-convert it to US then if it's going to be so flaky, i think this unit had problems when you first got it from memory so i'm hoping this latest problem is only related to the Asian fw and is not a hardware failure.
If you only done restarts try hard resetting it. If several hard-resets don't fix it's aberrant behaviour that is. To allow MSM you may need to cure it, using QuickCure3 rather than full cure may be enough: [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...]. However, first try to access preboot by holding the battery symbol for ~6 seconds to see if Updater.exe recognises it before resorting to a cure. In preboot flash it back to full US, because it's HWID wasn't changed from 0870 there should be no problem with that.

I forget what MSM means. I used quickcure when I bricked it initially I could never get the other program to work.

MSM = Mass Storage Mode. Does it get seen by updater.exe in pre-boot mode? If so try flashing it back to US without a cure.
It may be that there's a corrupt file on board if it still plays up with US and can't access MSM still. Cure fw allows MSM so you can access the internal files system to either remove problem file/s, or reformat it entirely using RMPrepUSB. QuickCure3 doesn't always work as it's quite generic rather than unit specific, but in my understanding of the principal behind it is if does work then Cure3 would definitely work too. I always try QuickCure first though. I only just now un-bricked a 1450 on which QuickCure wouldn't work even though i've used it before on various units numerous times successfully. It probably depends on the reason for the unit not booting and whether the unit is getting partly into the boot process or hardly at all.
In your case, it's booting so QuickCure may work to allow MSM, but if it doesn't use Cure3.

So do I need to create an rgn file from the us files?

Yes. Start with US/EU version 4.50 GUPDATE.GCD and create 087001000450.rgn using RGN_Tool then flash with Updater.exe [provided your unit can reach preboot of course, you have said it can't so i assume it can]. Don't worry about the other files like voices yet seeing you can't reach MSM anyway. If it's partly bricked we'll have to cure it anyway.

OK, new weirdness, I can enter mass storage mode from Linux. And once the device warms up it works fine. But none of the cure software works, nor will windows recognize the device as a hard drive, but it does charge the device. Any thoughts on this?

When you say 'none of the cure software works' do you mean you can't flash it at all, or you can flash it in preboot but it doesn't change the behavior of the unit in that it still won't enter MSM in Windows? Check you have latest Garmin USB drivers installed in Windows: [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register...].

Have the latest usb driver, and tried putting it in preboot mode but neither garmincure nor quickcure will flash. I never get the ding that shows it as in msm mode. Can't get either program to work in WINE.

If you mean you've been using wine emulator in mac, not directly in Windows, find a Win OS machine even XP is fine to run this stuff.

I've been using WINE in linux since my win8 box won't recognize the device. Hey what file do I need to backup tokeep my favorites, or is that only something you can backup with Garmin Express.
