Default Nuvi 2595 loses maps and not recognized

    Hi

I have a situation with a Nuvi 2595 which I think I can solve, but need advice from more experienced people.

    The state so far:

Downloaded new maps about ten days ago and everything seemed fine. Then unit apparently lost those maps and all POI's and was no longer recognized as an MTP device or mass storage. It booted okay and I was able to go to the Developers screen and turn it to a mass storage device - this made no difference. Win7 could NOT 'see' device so I could do nothing online.

Decided to use GarminCure and flash device with CureFW. I can now see device in win, but only as a completely unallocated device. However, I can not allocated a drive letter or new volume, win is not allowing this because the device contains info??

Anyway(bear with me)I have managed to get into the device using zar 9.2. THe POI's are still there and I think the maps, have backed up what I can.

Should I now format this beast and load the minimal files to get it started? If so what are the MINIMUM files it needs to get it to boot?
    Or is it a brick?

    thanks for any help

    Cliff

Do you still have cure fw on board? You haven't mentioned if you loaded original fw again. I'd do that if you haven't already, then either hard reset it or clear nonvol and also check you have latest Garmin USB Drivers loaded to PC. If it's still not recognised and/or you can't allocate a drive letter in Disk Management, load cure again and attempt to reformat it with RMPrepUSB. The only file you'll then need on the device is an empty Garmin folder in the root, probably not even that for it to boot fully. I think 25x5 will boot empty anyway from my [uncertain] memory. You can replace most everything with WebUpdater and MapUpdater, or use GarminExpress for both software and maps. You'll need to load a basemap and maybe some other stuff from your backup, but be wary as one of those files may be the villain.

    Thanks Neil

Yes I did load the original FW again(several times and tried different versions of both)but it made no difference. Haven't hard reset it yet, didn't think that was the issue or a cure, but could try, nothing to loose?

One question. Do I definitely need a basemap to get it to start? Only how will I know what to install? Will it ask for these things?

    thanks

Certainly you should hard reset it it, You'll lose favourites like recent history and home location, but that's no big deal. Seeing you can access the Diagnostics Page>Developer Info, go to Nonvol Statistics and press the menu bars in the top LH corner then Clear Nonvol. It's even more comprehensive than a hard reset. Resetting a strangely acting unit is the best first-aid/immediate action. It should be done after curing in any case, and certainly before even trying a cure fw if the unit can boot like yours. I routinely clear nv or hard reset any unit before and after loading any fw.

The unit will start without a basemap and not complain but may not work properly in real use. The basemap is named gmapbmap.img and it's stored in the unit's .System folder.

Right, I cleared nonvol and did the hard reset with no effect. Have now formatted the nuvi and copied over the backup that Express creates before a map update, i.e .system, gpx, poi, and reports. There was no gmapbmap.img present in the .system folder. The nuvi boots up with the latest firmware, but after the startup screen it shuts down. Figure I'm missing a file or two. Express will download the latest maps to it, but can't see this helping. Webupdater doesn't 'see it'. Anymore thoughts on what I could do?

Format device with prep usb: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    - Create empty folder on device and add name Garmin
    - Add inside garmindevice.xml from backup ( don't add nothing else )
    - run webupdater or garmin express and update all
    - add gmapbmap.img in .System folder
    - disconect device from Pc and turn it on and nuvi will work like charm
    - now again connect it to pc and with GE download maps.

    Thanks

Have formatted already to those instructions.

Big problem, I don't have either of the two files mentioned. Never did have, not even in the backup.

In backup don't you have garmindevice.xml in Garmin folder?
You need that file only after formatting with RMPrepUSB to run Webupdater or Express.
You can add basemap later and you can get it on forum.
Don't add old files like gpx and pois.

    @cliffy2
Some units won't boot empty and require there be files onboard but in my experience 2595 is definitely not one of them, it can be totally empty and on boot will create in root the .System folder [with some subfolders] and Garmin folder with updated GarminDevice.xml in it. It might be that one of the files you've copied back from the GE backup is corrupt. Remove everything and try to boot it empty. If still not booting fully, try by [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and a Garmin folder in the root. Otherwise do the format again only with RMPrepUSB. If none of that works there may be a problem with the flash memory of this unit. Do you have a backup of region 41?

The 'backup' created by GE is not complete anyway, I always back up manually. But that's certainly not your problem in this case anyway.

Will format and try an empty boot tonight. The maps downloaded but then refused to build, but then that wasn't going to help anyway.
