    Default Need help with Street Pilot 2720

    Please let me know if posted in wrong place. Street Pilot 2720 will not load maps after doing a map update (NT 2015.20). Cycling between loading maps (dimmer screen) and power up (bright screen). Was working fine before update. Unit did shut down during update at 6 minutes before it ended. Now neither Mapsource or Garmin's site ''sees'' the unit. I know this update is compatible since I have another 2720 (withh the ill fated lifetime updates) working perfectly. I did do a powerup_find and did erase all user data.

    27x0 doesn't have a definite pre-boot mode as later units do which allows to load a cure fw to see the internal file structure in Mass Storage Mode and delete corrupt files. These older units are in a permanent 'quasi-preboot' mode and can never be accessed in MSM anyway. Please say how you were updating the map to the unit, was it with MapSource [which would load the map as gmapsupp.img] or was it with MapUpdater [which would load it as gmapprom.img].

    Can the unit be seen by [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and/or [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]? Check you have latest [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] loaded before checking if it's seen.

    Then the faulty map is probably 'gmapprom.img' if it was loaded with MapUpdater. I don't no how to recover such an old unit, my experience is with newer units which can flash a cure fw so they can enter MSM. If it could be seen by WebUpdater then it would have been easy to just load the map again with a good image: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

    It seems then that the unit is definitely 'bricked' and cannot boot almost certainly because it can't load the corrupt map image file.

    I think that it may be possible to erase/overwrite rgn49, which is the region where the Primary detail map is stored named gmapprom.img, using a custom *.rgn file flashed with Updater.exe. I'll need more help with this from one or more of the resident Software Experts so hopefully one of them knows the SP2720 and will post with some info. In the meantime, can you check for sure that it's detected by Updater.exe? Please download the current firmware from here:
    Code:
    Please Login or Register to see the links
    Don't run it. You need to extract the file to obtain to obtain the two files 040401000720.rgn and Updater.exe. If you have trouble extracting, rename 'StreetPilot2720_720.exe' to 'StreetPilot2720_720.zip' and then extract it that way.

    With the 2 files in the same folder, drag the rgn file onto Updater.exe which will open, enable the radio button next to 'USB Device', then connect the SP to your PC by USB and power it on. Hopefully the window to the right will populate with 'StreetPilot 2720 [Unit ID xxxxxxxxxx]' which indicates that it can be flashed. If you want to fully test it and you're game, you can flash it because it's the current SP2720 fw anyway so it certainly shouldn't cause any further problems but it's your choice [who knows it might just sort it out if you reflash the fw, but i doubt it].

    Good luck. If it can't be seen by Updater.exe then maybe it's toast.

    Neil, update was successful but no change in outcome. Mapsource however now ''SEES'' the device but says there was an error communicating with your device. Please etc etc. This is probably caused by the device always rebooting?

    Yes it would be caused by that i guess. Probably connects with it momentarily and then loses it again. At least Updater holds the connection so it can be used to flash regions.

    Now we only need to find out how to erase rgn49 to wipe the primary map. I suspect there is a way to make a flashable RGN from an IMG file renamed to BIN. It's been done to change the fixed basemaps in regional SPs [e.g. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] enabling proper use in EU]. We can make an img into a bin and vice versa, that's easy by just changing the extension. I can load the map bin to RGN_Tool but i cannot override the section or the region setting which defaults to 33 when we need 49. I asked about it [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] but didn't get a reply.

    Maybe by making an rgn file with something such as makergn.exe could sections and regions to be changed. But now i'm just blathering, i've not used it so i simply dunno. There could also be a program like SendMap20 which can erase the primary map [it'll only erase the secondary map gmapsupp.img].

    Need Expert help here. C'mon you guys from the x-Eastern Block 'n' Central EU!! It won't kill you to help a couple of Westerners out .......

    Ok, i've made some progress but so far only helps me, not you for sure yet. I've made Pacific Basemap into an RGN, found the region number 33 in a hex editor, changed it to 03 and flashed it to my US 2720 which had Americas Basemap on board. I now have the Pacific Basemap in it's place. So far so good.

    But when i change the region number to 49 in the rgn file of a small detail map, Rarotonga, update.exe either reports that the device isn't responding or immediately finishes as successfully flashed but my original primary detail map's still there. I've since loaded it successfully as the primary map using the WebUpdater command line method no problem. But my 2720 is healthy, so WebUpdater is unlikely to work for you if invoked by command line when it can't see the unit using the GUI. If you want to try it, i'll upload the kit for Rarotonga, it's the smallest map around, only one tiny tile 63,469 bytes. The whole image is only 86,016 bytes [84 KiB] and it flashes in a few seconds. If it does work for you it'll clear rgn49 which should un-brick the device. Something to try while we wait for the Cavalry.

    This is uncharted waters for me and it seems the Cold War has restarted, no help forthcoming from the East. ..... Wait! .... Did i hear hoof-beats?

    Perhaps 2720 is different but Nuvi uses Region 48 for system that has the maps. What I have done before is, renamed 48.bin to 48.img. Used UltraIso to open the image, delete the map, then Save it in UltraIso. Then I manually added the rgn header with changed id to 48 to the 48.img. Renamed it to 48.rgn and flashed it with updater.exe. I can provide more info on the header if needed when I get a chance to look at it again.

    I know in Nuvi this does flash successfully as I verified with read back. But in my case it didn't not fix my problem with 265w which probably has bad Nand area for NVRAM or corrupted badly.

    @flagmax
    Thanks for the suggestion, but your musing is correct that StreetPilot 2720 [and earlier] are different. I agree that nuvi 2 series and circa have the internal files system on rgn48. Recent units have it on rgn83. No problem to write back with txt commands on card too, even copy the entire internal file system with copy dir, some 'semi-bricked' units can even do that using kunix's modded boot method depending on the cause preventing the boot like described in [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] for instance. But unfortunately we can't dump regions from these older units [afaik] so no way to modify a region and flash it back as an RGN. The only regions' usage which i know for sure are rgn3 for basemap [see post #7], 49 for the primary map gmapprom.img and 50 for an OEM map gmapoem.img. Sendmap20 and MapSource/MapInstall write secondary map gmapsupp.img but i don't know to which region, maybe it shares region 49 with gmapprom.img, i simply dunno. I think rgn5 might be for boot on these units too. I'm very interested in your info about writing back the header for 48/83 on nuvi though, i thought 2xx/2xxW could have 48 erased but it wouldn't copy however that might be only 2x0/W, can't remember. You should open a topic about that header stuff separately, i'm sure i won't be the only one interested in it.

    The point for me is that this is a whole new ballgame and anyone else used only to dealing with nuvi series 2/3/6/7 and later. I happy to fumble in the dark here, because i have several SPs, an AU 310, a US 2610 and 2 x 2720s also US [one of which suffers from an untraceable and unpredictable intermittent screen freeze so i'm prepared to play with it, torturing it to death if need be. I only paid a couple of bucks for it on eflea a few weeks back, listed as for parts only/not working for the sole purpose of attempting to change the basemap. This thread reminded me of it and prompted me to find a way using updater.exe now i've managed to do that, so i already owe our New England friend technit [i assume his 'South Shore' is the Massachusetts South Shore].

    I know 49 can be flashed with a new map, no matter how small it will erase the existing primary map in a healthy unit using command line to invoke WU. In my US 2720 i overwrote the onboard 2014.20 lower 48 with Raratonga as reported above, and have now overwritten that with AUNZ 2015.30 using the same method. This is what our MA friend is now game to try but i don't think it'll break anything even if it starts but fails to flash fully or aborts. He already has a corrupt map on rgn49 anyway. Where Sendmap20 has a command to erase the secondary map via it's GUI and i think it can also be done with the command line [x:/Garmin/Sendmap20.exe -e] but i don't think WU has a working 'erase' command like that and can only overwrite the primary map via it's GUI or command line. His unit can't be seen in WU's GUI, so i guess it probably won't find it if invoked by command line either but that's worth a try.

    As i also reported above, my kindergarten-level hex manipulation skills have fluked me replacing my unit's Americas basemap with the Pacific one, but i'm stuffed with writing to 49 using the Updater.exe/RGN file method which we know will work on technit's unit as he could successfully flash fw with updater. I guess the fw is being written to rgn14 [but again i dunno] what is important is that it can write regions at least. So, provided his rgn49 isn't damaged and is only corrupted by an incomplete map image aborted mid-load, if we can find a way to erase it or overwrite it with a good img it should boot normally. I hope your advanced skills can help with this, i need somebody to work out how to hex edit a detail map RGN file for rgn49 the way i've lucked-in with a basemap for rgn3. I'm prepared to risk my sick 2720 to test anything first as i only bought it to find a way to replace the basemap so it's already served it's purpose and is useless for normal use because of the screen freeze. I think you can and will help with this so please excuse the quick update on the differences between these early automotive garmims and the later ones.

    @technit
    The Cavalry's arrived. Hope you don't mind that it's from sunny [but formerly Confederate] CA, or maybe even from your northern neighbour CA depending on whether 'Ca' means California or Canada, lol! Maybe we might get others helping too, but this guy flagmax know's what he's doing and will be teaching me stuff about these old things within a few nanoseconds. While he's gathering his thoughts, let's try this:
    • Hook the unit up to your PC
    • Extract this pack to somewhere convenient, your Desktop will do, to find the file named 'update_detailmap_2720.BAT' and the Rarotonga map named 'gmapprom.img': [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
    • Go to your C drive and check you have WebUpdater in the root folder Garmin there. Open the WebUpdater folder to see it's the actual program in there including importantly the file WebUpdater.exe. If it's not there you'll need to find where it is on your PC and move or copy the program folder over to the Garmin folder.
    • Move or copy the small gmapprom.img over to C:\Garmin [don't put it inside the WU folder, just in the Garmin one]
    • Go back to the update_detailmap_2720.BAT file and double click it to run it. This command will run: "C:\Garmin\WebUpdater\WebUpdater.exe /upload_file rgn=49 path=C:\Garmin\gmapprom.img -autorun usb /i" and hopefully after the DOS box opens it will be quickly followed by WebUpdater's progress window which should very quickly load the tiny map to overwrite your corrupt primary one. If successful the unit will reboot normally and you can then load your NA map again with MapUpdater.

    I fully expect that this may not work. If so, don't despair. There'll be more refined things soon to try no doubt. Try to get screenshots of any error screens if it fails though ['Ctrl' + 'Print Screen SysRq' keys, open Paint and press 'Paste' button]. Good luck mate!
