Try different cable or different USB port on your Pc.
Do you set MTP settings to Mass storage?
Maybe this is your problem if you didn't set it to mass storage and maybe damaged cable or usb port on your Pc.

I think if it shuts off during map install, this means some of the installed files in nuvi are corrupt.
So I'd format, check garmindevice.xml if it's ok, run Webupdater to get right files, reset nuvi, reinstall Garmin drivers, reinstall Garmin communicator plugin, run Mapupdater instead of GE.
Do you set MTP settings to Mass storage? How do I do this? no mention of that in the tutorial. Cant be a damaged cable and nt a problem with USB ports either. I will give it a charge again on the way and back from work.Quote:

Tried all that and it still powers off during map install. Be handy if i could get the map files required to install them by pasting them little by little.Quote:

I've tried pressing up right corner several times for over 10 seconds it doesn't come up with the menu ?
- on first page when nuvi start tap on Map
- now tap on speed
- press and hold 10 sec in middle of speedometer and you will enter in hidden menu
p.s.
or open link in my signature and you will see in picture how to enter in hidden menu.
I dont get the MTP settings? I get
Shutdown causes
Developter Info
Diagnostic Logging GPS Simulator Mode
Demo Mode
No where is there a MTP section in the list? There is no other page to scroll down too either. It's blanked out in the arrows.
The thing is when it's connected to the PC through USB it stays on connected for a while. It's just when it gets written too it powers off after a minute or less.
Guys, he has a nuvi 50. It isn't an MTP device.
@djdyna
Try this: Make a copy of your GarminDevice.xml. Get a clean microSD/SD or USB stick at least 4GB, create a Garmin root folder and in there paste the xlm file and nothing else. Run MapUpdater and install your map to the 'fake nuvi'. If it installs correctly, copy the map and associated unl/gma files over to your nuvi and boot it up.
That would seem to indicate that the 50 doesn't operate in MTP mode.
@Neil faster ;)
30/40 too ?
Yup. 30/40 and 42/44/52/54 too, all are not MTP devices.
PS:
@djdyna
BTW, pressing the upper right corner in nuvi xx only gets the Help menu. Pressing the battery symbol near the upper right for ~6 secs will take you to another hidden diagnostic menu, version info and inventory page etc. This is different hidden menu to the one accessed via the speedometer.
