**SOLVED**
I spent some time and read the tutorial on secret menus and found that on the 3490 you can clear all the user data via the trip computer center, if you hold it for 6 or so seconds, it takes you back to having to set up your Local country preference. in my case the UK.
It now works the way I knew it should .

N3490 ecoRoute fuel currency symbol
My 3490lmt is set up for UK on themes, miles in units and seems to work perfectly well as a GPS, it just has one small issue that bugs me, it wants to price fuel in Euro's in the EcoRoute function.
Does anyone know away of changing the currency symbol in this function ??
I have reset the vehicle profile, themes, units, many times now and it still wants euro's I suspect there is a secret menu somewhere or something very simple I have overlooked.
Any suggestions
