Default BAYO Carte Explorer .byo files

    Hi all,

Does anyone have any software or info for converting the Bayo . byo french ign raster maps into a format compatible with the garmin unit's. There is talk of this software existing to convert the .byo file extentions but it appears to be very hard to find.

    Thanks

The Bayo IGN maps are rastermaps and like all other rastermaps they can not easily be converted into Garmin format.
I strongly advise you to use the latest Topo France v3 Pro, it's based on the same IGN data (but much more up to date than the Bayo maps which are very old) and is one of the finest Garmin Topo maps you can get.

If you persist in converting .byo maps you should start to convert the ~6000 map tiles into png format with a program called cByo and generate an OziExplorer calibration file. After a few weeks of hard work you can start converting the png files into jnx maps or convert them into Garmin vector maps with Mapwel.

    Thanks Mapperoni ,

Yes I use the Topo France v3 pro already and agree it is excellent !

The reason I ask for the Bayo rasters as well is that they have the Ski touring routes shown like the ign paper maps not just mountain paths as per v3 pro. I want to put this map on the sd card along with v3 pro and be able to toggle between the two whilst out on the hill.

Thanks for your "how too" though much appreciated !

Years ago I did the byo conversion myself but the map is too old for me now.
A much better way is to make use of someone who did the hard work for you already, he created Rmaps (CompeGPS) for all French regions. He used the actual IGN 25k data available from Geoportail. A huge job!

There is another small program called CartoNaze for the conversion of the CartoExploreur .byo files into bmp or png. The last version of CartoNaze is 1.3 or 1.4 as far I remember. From the source:

    CartoNaze Version 1.3

([Only registered and activated users can see links.
    - .cal : Lambert II+
    - .jpr : Fugawi ([Only registered and activated users can see links. ])
    - .map : OziExplorer ([Only registered and activated users can see links. ])

    Hi,

For your information, don't waste time converting BYO maps, they are out of date and won't be updated as IGN french maps.
Futhermore, the tool "Cbyo" only works with Bayo's maps released before 2005.
Now, IGN sells its own hike preparation software (Georando) and does not distribute its maps anymore (in a competitive setting). Unfortunately, "Georando" is not as good as "Carto Eplorer".

Actually IGN do sell their current 25k raster maps for a variety of devices, here are a few:

    - Garmin Birdseye Select
    - CompeGPS
    - Satmap
    - Memory-map
    - ViewRanger

You are right but I was talking about Bayo. Actually I use CompeGPS, which is a good hike preparation software, with IGN topo 25 of course.

    Hi

Is there a way anyone knows of converting the .RMAP in CompeGPS to an Garmin .img file other than using Ozi Explorer with has the option disabled in demo mode ...........

    Thanks
