City Nav CN permanently locked to the first device it is installed on?

Is City Navigator is copy protected and permanently locked to the first device it is installed on?

Can it be used on multiple computers but only one GPS device?

I have heard to fix it, you will need to buy a separate copy of City Navigator to install on your eTrex 20.

    Anyway around this limitation?

Yes, permanently locked. Bounded to one device you choose.

If you purchase it as a downloadable version I think you can install it on as many PCs as you like and on one device. And it won't be illegal. But I think it also depends whether you are going to use it for personal usage or lets say you are going to install it on the companies PCs. If this is the case I think it would be illegal. Better to consult Garmin. Most probably for each computer should be purchased a separate copy.

If you want to install it on other devices you need to purchase additional subscriptions for the other devices. Same applies if you purchase it on a DVD. Only available online I think.

But it also might depend which City Navigator - Europe, USA, Russia, Australia... you purchased. Different versions might apply different rules. Those Garmins....

Regarding arounding the limitation I think the only way is to change the prebult device Identification Code or ID. Not so hard. But there is also a but. Each installation of CN provide specific files needed for the model/series which most of the time does not apply to the other series. So this way is not very suitable.

Other way might be just to install it on an SD card rather than to a device. By this way by swithing the SD card you can use it on as many devices as you want.

Also install it on a removable HDD....

Normally it is (as you saisd) locked/licensed to one specific GPS by its UnitID.

You can download and use the GImgUnlock.exe tool to make any garmin .img file unlockable. Once you have done that, you just need to copy it to SD/MicroSD or GPS and it will simply work. The IMG file is used only in the GPS and has nothing to do with a PC.

If you have and IMG file on a GPS or SD/MicroSD and connect it to a USB port on a PC, the Garmin BaseCamp program can read the IMG and display/access it from the PC.

There is a whole other path you need to learn if your goal is to have maps on a PC so you can build custom maps for any GPS or data card. You should browse the tutorials to learn more about that. The relavent words to look for would be ".gamp or .gmap folder", "Mapinstall", and "Mapsource".

    @ tiger

I think you didn't understand the question. The key word here is "buy" not "pirate" Origin from the first word.

No, the key word here is USE!

I suppose the real question is does this device lock feature apply to unlocked file imgs got from this site?

No it doesn't apply if the keyword is 'use', but only an unlocked image can be used on all devices which are capable of using that type of map image. To give you a personal example Scherms, if you have an official [purchased or LM] City Navigator map image on your nuvi50 it is 'locked' to that one device and will only work in it's internal memory or on a microSD inserted in the 50, provided the associated unlock/gma files are still present. If you copy and paste the img file, even with the unlock and gma codes, to the internal memory of any other device, or if you insert that card in any other device including of course your eTrex, it will not work.

The 'device lock feature' to which you're referring is the GMA protection and it's associated *.gma file and the unlock codes which bind the image to a specific unit. As Caty points out this is easily overcome with gimgunlock and the image is then fully 'unlocked' and usable universally without any gma/unl codes.

As far as using the 'locked' image file on multiple computers as per your initial post, locked or unlocked it's no problem for BaseCamp.
