Default Garmin mobile pc key- 2 threads merged

Hello all hope someone can help.
I am no stranger to mobile pc but have a perplexing question.
Recently i tried to install mobile pc from my remote hard drive to a laptop (win7) using the main msi file in version 5.70 but it went to the hard drive as default location install and not to the laptop.
So i uninstalled and re installed after shifting program to c:/ drive on laptop only to discover it went back to remote hard drive.
It also retained the key in the about section that is the wrong one (not unit id) and i dont get the skip part so i cant register.
So my question is does anyone have a copy of the original software and not an update so i can tell it what directory to load it in.
Also if not where does it keep the location so i can delete and start again fresh. I mean temp file or install log or registry entry.
My uninstalls have been as thorough as i can deleting anything to do with mobile pc and sifting though registry but it still retains software key and still installs to hard drive.
HELP what am i doing wrong.

Default catymag can you help mobilepc win7 problem

    Hello.
Just to let you know before i go on i am familiar with this program and have had this on several laptops.
I am using win 7 and i mistakenly installed mobilepc from a external hard drive using the main msi file.
It installed but not on my c drive but the external hard drive.
I uninstalled and deleted all garmin/mobilepc files i could find also in hidden app files.
    I also did the registry.
I then copied the program to the c:/ drive and installed again only to find it went back to the external hard drive again.
Also it retained the same software id (which wont work with sw.unl ).
Is there somewhere i am missing that retains all info for loading mobilepc that is specific to win 7.
I have trawled everywhere in win7 apps files program file looking for an install temp file.
Also there is a line you can put in registry to fool mobile pc into thinking it is already installed but for the life of me i cant remember it.
Also does anyone have an original software only version that does not load from main msi but the install file.
    Any ideas
    Edit :- a new development.
I copied over mapsource program from my external drive and loaded it from c:/ drive and it to went to loaded to the external drive.
It might be a windows thing

I don't think it's the software that the problem, if you run it from MAIN.msi it should be ok and not look for a previous version. Here's the rar pack link anyway: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Are you sure you've got rid of the GarminMoblePC folder from the Garmin folder of Application Data? (C:/Documents and Settings/%username%/Application Data/Garmin/GarminMobilePC OR C:/Documents and Settings/user/AppData/Roaming/Garmin/GarminMobilePC). If that's deleted you should then do clean install no problem. Have a look at your other HD where MobilePC was installed before in case it's installed a sneaky Users folder in there too. Disconnect that extra hd anyway and run the setup only from the laptop.

Wouldn't be the simplest solution to install programs with external drive disconnected?

    Yeah did that.
disconnected drive and mobile pc said not enough space on highlighted drive g:/ external drive and win 7 does not have document and settings( or it does when you unhide protected system files and when you try to open it, it says you aint allowed in).
Its the same as c:/users/username/app data yada yada.

To gain access, you must unlock it by right-clicking on the locked parent folder: Properties> Security > Advanced > Highlight the Group or User Names you wish to allow > Change Permissions > Edit > Apply to: This Folder, subfolders & files > Check all the Allow boxes, uncheck any Deny boxes > OK > Apply > OK. That should unlock the folder and its entire contents. Delete the 'GarminMobilePC' folder from the 'Garmin' subfolder and try the install again from MAIN.msi.

If after you've removed the GarminMobilePC folder you continue to have a problem running the setup from MAIN.msi because it's still looking for a previous installation, apply this reg patch: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Then repeat the whole procedure and run the msi install again. Under Win 7 it will sometimes look for that reg entry as well.
