A few have been trying to break the new TT encryption for three years now with no luck. It has been described as devilishly complex. Its implementation coincided with a completely user inaccessible file system and concurrent reports of poor performance. Customers just stopped buying the Tomtom Via line in the US.
At first I thought the renewed Garmin effort might have been related to the $7.2B Microsoft purchase of Nokia, but Nokia did not include the NAVTEQ (aka Here) division in that deal.
FWIW - My mostly anecdotal observation is that Garmin has just hammered Tomtom in the consumer GPS market for the past two years.
@ Redrock
Haven't u understand that this protection is not made by garmin? It is a third party protection.
The pity is that no firmware/map crypting is gonna save the third party developers from Garmin free/lifetime maps. As much as they try. It is a marketing question not software.
I do not think that this map and distributor in Romania have any relation to Garmin policy. And so this fact run counter to the Garmin policy. What's are bad - no free actual update of SW, no possibility to install other map with the same abnormal encryption (read - the competitor product as for Ukraine).
Only two distributors has the same encryption - Romania and Ukraine. The both try to justify it as opposition to nonofficial import. But I can see only exorbitantly overpriced price on products in compare to neighbour countries. Plus Ukraine have another problem - two distributor and each have proper map. But Ukraine is especially case. We all hear news - the neglect of the authorities and big businesses to the people leads the bad end! May be Luxena and Aeroscan made a small contribution to it because they too rigidly tied buyers to own awful techsupport.
Garmin is not kind magician too and closes his eyes for own profit! But do not think that he do it with love :) I hope!
@Redrock3
TT encryption is universal as you know. In the case of the recent RO.A.D and also the Ukrainian Aeroscan maps, as pointed out by ddabcd277 & Giomen, the encryption is done by 'quasi-independent' regional distributors which requires a custom firmware to be installed to the unit and it's also securely locked to the UID. From a marketing point of view I reckon they've shot themselves in the foot. The problems caused by any loss of market to Garmin hardware in Romania & Ukraine is probably short term and Garmin themselves will gain in the longer term.
Ideologically, Garmin probably would like to emulate TT with worldwide encryption but i'm guessing they won't simply because they're reveling in their hardware market share clawback from TT in Western markets. It seems the real profit is in hardware or they wouldn't be offering lifetime maps on almost all their automotive range now. Where's that philosophy going to leave the encrypting regional distributors eventually? Marginalized is probably a polite way of putting it.
You can add to this unlockable maps list:
I had the pleasure to look at one of those maps and it's encrypted exactly like ROAD and Navilux.Code:http://www.darmoja.com/about-us.html
But Garmin do not hurry to put money in post Soviet Market. And he have full right to do it. Nokia had tried to invest money in Russia and Ukrainian distributor network at the time. But Nokia walked smack to grand fraud of century. My friend said that it would kill this company but Nokia was dying painfully long and missed a knockout beat from other side. Although you never know - my friend was winner in any case after that he sold the shares back at the good time...Quote:

Without a doubt, Garmin know this lesson and stay at the position that better a little profit than the big problem.
It is interesting - Saudi Arabia is quite legal country to opposite of Romania and Ukraine. So this seller must be have patent for encryption. OK! May be my ex-wife do not kill me right away at next visit and I could ask her to check it. She is patent assistant. I think the creator of SW is the same...Quote:
