Default Creating smaller IMG map in order to fit 512MB datacard

New to this amazing forum and looking for some quick guidance to ensure I am on the right track. I have read a lot of posts and come some way so far. I have searched the forum but couldn't find an answer to this.

I have a large Bluechart g2 map (1.8GB) which I would like to trim to a smaller area in order to reduce the file size to less than 512MB (I have to use a Garmin proprietary datacard).

I am trying to do this by limiting the area in GMaptool and then I hope to create a single smaller img file.

It seems that the Split Area Limit options are only available when creating files to mapsource and the output I get is several img files and a very small mapset.img.

The next step is then join these using GMaptool and then check if the resulting img is small enough and covers the area I need.

In my case I don't see any need for using mapsource (I am using Homeport) so it's unfortunate that Gmaptool can output a single img split by area.

I am using the right approach or do I need to do something else?

    Thanks!

With the SPLIT action in Mapsource mode GMapTool generates additional files needed to bind a mapset to Mapsource.
You can find in the output folder the installer for Mapsource ,open that directory and install it running install batch inside-
You'll have it installed in Mapsource
When you'll have the mapset in Mapsource you can send a part of the map to your device or to your sd ( with a patched Mapsource) and look at it in Homeport. Dont forget to select in GmapTool "Create TDB for marine map" and "Compile preview map"
It's an advanced option, GMapTool will create TDB for marine map. Map will be visible in Mapsource and HomePort but not in BaseCamp.
GmapTool created Bluecharts will loose some functionalities, not all the Bluecharts features will be supported in this kind of maps.

    OK I appreciate the guidance.

I installed the patched version of Mapsource 6.16.3 and I split the img in GMapTool to MS files - there were no errors.

I then ran the install.bat and when I open MapSource I can't see anything at all except the file in Manage Map Products. I have tried zooming with no result.

Any thoughts as to what I have missed?

Yes, I have tried that (and medium). Also zoomed in and out.

There are no maps (or anything) listed in the window on the left.

OK I found the problem. The default setting after a new installation of MapSource of View /Switch to Product is No Map!

    Sorry more rookie problems here

I created a new map in MapSource by selecting a few maps that came to approx. 450MB. I then used MapSource to Send it to a virtual sd card (created with ImDisk). I can see the GPMAPSUPP.img there and I can read the info in GMapTool - all seems to be correct. But when I open HomePort the img file is not present. ??

Why would you use this crippled file in HomePort when you have the original larger file for that purpose?
Check the MS flag (MapSource flag) and set that to 0. Look in the tutorial section for GMapTool or in the partial quote below.

What is the BC g2 chart you are messing with and what area are you trying to extract?

Hi Ballebar, Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. The map is HXEU800X and I want to trim it to less than 512MB.

The reason I want to view trimmed map is that I want to check that the result of the trimming process before I transfer the map to a real datacard.

Your tip to set MS to 0 did the trick.

When I view the resulting map in Homeport all the sections that I have selected in MS are not present in the output.

I have done this twice now to confirm, the first time there was also some kind of corruption in the data as there were what looked like trees in the sea!
