    FWIW
    I like to experiment.

Tried the reverse and created a mapset with only the bitmap raster .img files - BlueChart G2 New Zealand North VPC416S.img - 280MB.
Removed ALL other mapsets, POI, waypoints, tracklogs etc.
Cleared all data from Dakota 20. This proved to be important. It is amazing how much residual data is stored in the internal hidden flash memory.

    Results on my GPS:
The mapset appears to contains ONLY images. Satellite images and some black and white? (can't see much colour) close up harbour photos which are of no real use for my navigation purposes.

    Tides - none.
    POI - can't see any.
Other detail - can't find any.
Where To? - absolutely nothing searchable.

Remember this is only valid for my chart sets which now include:
    hxpc024R G2i Australia NewZealand v3
VPC416S G2 Vision New Zealand North
VPC417S G2 Vision South Island New Zealand
VPC021R G2 Vision Mackay NW to Esperance
VPC410S G2 Vision Esperance to Exmouth Bay

G2Vision maps up to v11.00 (2009) generally weren't usable on handhelds, because of this awful satellite pictures. From v11.50 (2010) Garmin changed the G2V maps, so that the satellite imaginary is deactivatable on Oregon & co. Unfortunately on the new GPSmap 62 and 78 series both parts will be shown as one unit in maps menu, so that you have the same problem as Oregon & co. before! As long as Garmin don't change this by firmware upgrade, you can only use G2 or classic BlueCharts on your device. The horrible satellite images are dangerous for navigation. I nearly set a sailyacht on a rock between west swedish archipelago because I didn't see anything on the map after changing zoom range.
I have a Garmin GPSMAP 76CSx with which I used the g2Visions maps and they seem to display fine with no satellite pictures or strange views you all seem to have. I don't know what may be different about the 76CSx, but it works with the vision charts. I'll have to investigate further.

Older devices like GPSmap60/76 can't display raster maps. They are not able to show the satellite pictures and that's why they haven't any problems with G2V maps.

Now I solved the problem with the tide tables, harbour images and POI!

The bitmap files have internal numbers (shown e.g. in GMapTool), beginning with P - these are the satellite images. Only one file (the biggest) begins with V - those file contains the tides, images and POIs:
    attachment.php?attachmentid=90834&d=1310598208

I created the new image file including this file and so all missed features are avilable.

Here you can see the result in HomePort:
    attachment.php?attachmentid=90835&d=1310598212

The file size is now 1.05GB (vs. 1.65GB originally)

It also seems to work fine on my Oregon.

    edit:
Unfortunately no search function works: neither for POI nor for tides or any other feature

    @scubadoo
It is important and interesting to say, wich version you have used for your experiments! Garmin has changed the G2 and G2V maps format between v11.00 (till 2009) and 11.50 (from 2010) - I just wrote [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. The maps have 2 parts:
In older maps are in the first part only marine informations and in the second part maps, satellite pictures and all other features.
In the newer maps, in part one are all additional features and in part two is only the navigation map.

Hey, I've done the operation on the Garmin VEU014R-Italy, Adriatic Sea Bluechart G2 Vision (10.50).[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
unfortunately, almost all subfile contain a "bitmap", and when I have removed them, I come up with a 20Mo file that is not working any more.
Any advise ? I am flying next month to Croatia.
    Thank you

There is obviously a big difference in the G2 version layouts.
I can only play with what I have.

My mapsets - note they are mostly older versions.

    VPC416S-New Zealand North (11.50) 26.08.2010
    VPC022R-East Coast Australia (10.50)
    VPC020R-Brisbane SW to Geraldton (10.50)
    hxpc024R-AUS/NZ Marine Detail g2i v3.00 - 2007
    VPC417S-New Zealand South (10.50)
    VPC021R-Mackay NW to Esperance (10.00)
    VPC410S-Esperance to Exmouth Bay (10.50)

The VPC416S-New Zealand North mapset is the only v11.50 I have here.
It does contain a single file beginning with V - V0000038 - only 20KB in size.
GMapTool did not report the file as having any "Bitmaps" so it was included in the new mapset.

As reported earlier everything here appears to be unbroken.
Tides, POI etc all still work for me with this mapset and the others.

Unfortunately it now appears that it is not working for some with other (newer?) G2 charts.

Now it makes sense. I was able to use both the g2 and the g2Vision, but once I get a 78 I would have to use only the g2. Unfortunately, most of the charts available here and other places are the g2 Vision. So the choices we have are cut down dramatically.

Do you know if this applies for the GPSmap62s as well? I'm wondering if the new G2V nautical maps will have problems on this device. I know when viewing in Basecamp, the satellite imagery interferes with the ability to look at the nautical chart (blue ocean images e.g.) and there doesn't appear a way to disable the layer.

    Thanks

Yes, the 62 is essentially the same internally as the 78 and is not designed to deal with the G2V charts.

Perhaps you can use the technics described in the above posts to tweak the charts to get rid of the satellite vews that interfere with the display, but I find it easier to just use the Regular charts.
