I have a Garmin 512MB Data Card and the USB Data Card Programmer but cannot find a way to see the serial number of the card. The reason for wanting the serial number is I'd like to be able to unlock a BlueChart map for the card. Thanks for any advice.
Depending on which Garmin GPS Model you have, you can place the card in the unit and press and hold the little battery icon until the diagnostic screen comes up. You may have to scroll thru a couple of screens, but sooner or later you will see the Serial number ID which is usually 10 digits long.
Be sure not to confuse the CID which you get thru the diagnostic screen with the "Unit ID" which you can get thru the "About" info screen. They are two different things.
If you do not have a Garmin model capable of this (mostly older models), there used to be info floating around the net explaining other ways to get the CID, but I haven't seen them around for a while.
If you do run across info on how to get the CID (Card ID) without using the GPS, please post a link or the info here so we can all benefit from the knowledge.
Catymag has all of this info in a great guide so do a search of the forum to find it. I have just repeated her info.
***OOPS... I see Catymag beat me to the punch and gave you the info.***

Thanks to you both - I'd seen the tutorial . The card is a proprietary Garmin Data card, not the generic type SD card. The GPS units that used this card were the likes of the 276C, 478 and 172 chart plotter, Garmin Part Number: 010-10226-21. The GPS units were not touch screen and the diagnostic mode (on a 276C Press and hold "Enter" and while doing that press and hold the power button) brings up a single page of text but the Data Card Is "Unknown" - even though the GPS software is the latest and the map is a open source map.
MapSource will only send a map to the card programmer but will not show the Unit ID or the files on the card. BaseCamp won't even see the card programmer.
I suspect, because it's a Garmin card plugged into a Garmin card reader, that the ability to work with data on the card has been severely crippled at the design stage.
As you say, the Fast Unlocker may be the only answer.
i cant open usb port with gpsdeamon.
I want to acess my data card with my data card programmer.
I want to be able to copy chart from data card, then be able to unlock and copy back to my data card.
Someone can help me?
Does a tool like datacard copy exist?
