Your easiest option is to use MapInstall which is free software from Garmin, download link:Quote:

Your SP2720 can use modern NT City Navigator mapping. Your DVD version from 2008 is dangerously outdated and it would be foolhardy to use it for such a long trip. Ditto for 2011 map. Your best course would be to obtain the latest 2019.30 version for US/MX as a PC Install version (also commonly referred to as "MapSource Version") and install that on your computer. This forum doesn't supply unlocked Garmin map files however you may be able to find them somewhere else. Best advice is for you to just buy the mapping from Garmin. As you need both US and MX it'd be cheaper to buy all of NA than US & MX separately. Be sure to get the PC install data not an already compiled *.img file.Quote:
2. Where/how to find newer North America maps compatible with the 2720? It seems like it can take City Navigator 2011. Any other map sources that is recommended?
Yes. Once you have the mapping installed, use MapInstall to select the necessary tiles for your route. As you can see below, I've selected 43 tiles covering NYC to Solidandad region. I did that very quickly so there may even be adjoining tiles selected which aren't necessary. Regardless, it's 43 tiles (selectable map sections) which total only around 700MB and your SP should have far more than that available in region 49 where the primary detail map is stored. You could therefore add more to your final map keeping in mind that rgn49 has probably well over 1GB total space. MI will report the available space as well as the total size needed for the selected area anyway:Quote:
3. Would I be able to fit the regions necessary to cover the route below?
