Default Garmin nuvi 1490lmt stuck at splash screen. [Solved].

The GPS keeps freezing at the "Garmin" screen when I turn it on. I am able to access the file system when connecting it via usb to the pc. Garmin Express and Garmin Web Updater can also access it. I have the latest revision installed and maps. I do not know what the hardware ID is and am unable to locate it. I would like to just format and start fresh but I don't won't to dig myself a deeper hole if I can help it. I copied the entire drive to a separate folder on my PC. I wanted to do a raw image of it but don't know how. That way if something happened, I could transfer it all back over and start again. This unit is the LMT version. I bought it back in the early part of 2010 as a refurb from Garmin. The USB port is also flakey and I have to position it a certain way so that it will stay connected.

There is a file on the unit preventing it from booting. It maybe a map, a voice, text file etc. By process of elimination you can remove files/folder starting with the last ones you know were changed or added. If that's too much effort, reformat it using only [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and then reboot it. It will create a Garmin folder, look inside to check it has also created GarminDevice.xml in there, if it's been named as a temp file then rename the extension .xml. Then connect to WebUpdater and MapUpdater to replace missing files and re-download your LM maps, or just use Garmin Express for it all. You may have to add a basemap: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

The loose usb port is a known problem with 14x0 units. I have a 1490 with that, simply not worth the trouble to repair it. I tape the usb/charger lead in place when i use it but eventually all those affected units' usb ports fail completely.

What program can I use that will make a raw backup of the GPS so that I can start over if something goes wrong? What had been happening is the unit would start to drag during a route after a month or so of use and the only way to free it up was to do a hard reset. I had to do this about every couple of months. The last time it did this was about 4 days ago. I tried to do a hard reset after I rebooted, but this time it would stick at the splash screen. It wouldn't go any further than this.

Just copy all the files and folders from Nuvi to your pc. Be sure to enable Windows to see the system files as well as the hidden files
    Read here in post n5

If you can do this too.

Like Neil wrote probably something went wrong with Express, Mapupdater or Webupdater, or you didn't unplug it safely from your pc and may be a file got corrupt, or simply, you copied something (a poi for example) not suitable in your Nuvi.

Out of all of the files on the GPS, only one file refuses to be copied. That file is 1.gpx in the "GPX" folder. Every time I try to copy just that one file, the PC drops connection and then re-establishes it. As long as I don't try to copy that one file, the unit stays connected. I don't know how that file is causing this. Every file and folder copied fine but that one. I set it so that the entire drive on the GPS would copy to the PC and once it got to that one file, it dropped and re-established connection. When it gave me the option to skip that one file, I said to skip and it proceeded to copy the rest of the files with no problem. I don't know how important this file is but I am about tempted to go ahead and format the GPS anyways.

I ran the format program to the T and rebooted it. There are no files on the internal drive. I safely removed and disconnected the cable, powered the unit back on to see what it would do and it is still freezing at the splash screen. While it was still on, I reconnected it to the PC and looked to see if anything changed. The internal drive is still empty. No Garmin folder was created nor any .xml files. I went ahead and loaded Garmin Express which still says that my unit is up to date with the firmware even though nothing is showing on the internal drive. My "do not show hidden folders and system folders" option is disabled so I should be able to see any files that are hidden. I don't know what the deal is.

Manually create the folder named Garmin [leave it empty], then try to boot again but that may not help. 1xxx units will boot empty. It doesn't seem to be getting far enough into the boot process anyway to create the folder and file. You didn't load a cure firmware by any chance did you before the format? Cure fw will only boot as far as the logo and then the unit needs to have the full original flashed again. You should also try reflashing the original fw V6.20 in any case, using pre-boot. Unfortunately, there may even be physical damage to the flash drive, or some other problem not fixable by reformatting. Even if you are certain that you did it right, first format again ensuring that you follow exactly the instructions and the pictorial guide in the RMPrepUSB thread.

EDIT: I see you added this when you edited your post just after I answered here:

The firmware [unit software] is not on the visible part of the flash drive which can be 'unhidden' such as the .System folder can. What you have done by reformatting only 'wipes' the internal files and does not affect the fw in any way, it is still there. At a basic level, only by loading other firmware with a GUPDATE.GCD file flashed via the .System folder [or from a Garmin folder on the microSD], or in pre-boot mode by flashing the fw as an *.rgn file using updater.exe can the fw be changed on the unit's 'invisible' protected non-vol memory. In the state your unit's in, only flashing in pre-boot is possible.

Unfortunately I did load a cure firmware. I guess I ruined it. I wasn't able to originally access the file system after it froze up the last time and I rebooted it. Loading the cure firmware allowed me to get into the file system. I also had downloaded nuvi13xxand14xxseries_GCDFile_620.gcd which is supposed to be the original firmware for that series and installed it with garmincure3.

So your device is currently visible as a flash drive by Windows, right? Then format it exactly as suggested [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Using original Windows formatter is a bad idea.
After that flash the firmware using ORIGINAL option of GarminCure3.
And see if the device boots and if it creates the Garmin folder.
If it doesn't boot, we will try something else.

If device don't create Garmin folder then create it manual and turn off/on device and webupdater will download all that you need.
If you wish, you can [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
