Guide 'Garmin Flash Device': how install a map in seconds

If you are an eTrex Owner you know what a slow installation is.

For me, the eTrex 30 is a really good device, why:

    • It’s inexpensive, under $299.99 USD (I paid like $240 on 2012),
    • It works with GPS and GLONASS satellites.
    • I’ve been in Eastern African, Eastern Europe and Sud America and works like a charm,
    • I’ve had some accidents biking and still works,
    • I forgot my device under heavy rain for around five hours and it was working when I found it.

BUT it has an Interface USB 1.0 or something like that, so installing a map is a pain on the ass! So, last year I figured it out a solution to install maps in seconds (I don’t have an excuse by not have shared this solution before, sorry for that).

The two major advantages of my solution are:

    1. You stop running the risk of damaging the USB port on your device and prevents heating the device,
    2. You can install maps in seconds.

Additionally, you don't need a virtual whatever to install/run maps.

So, what do you need? Hopefully you only need one of the items.

Memory card reader (for microSD, SD or both)
    Code:

    One microSD to SD adapter
    Code:

One microSD or SD card, FAT32 format (16GB if you want to play big)

Creation of the 'Garmin Flash Device':

    • Connect the eTrex to the computer with the USB cable,
    • On :\Garmin you will find the ‘x-file’ (*): GarminDevice.xml
    • COPY the ‘x-file’ on your computer,
    • Disconnect the eTrex from your computer,
    • Create a folder called Garmin on a microSD/SD card,
    • Copy the ‘x-file’ on the folder :\Garmin
    • Ready.

Installing a map on your 'Garmin Flash Device':

    • Open Garmin BaseCamp,
    • Plug the “Garmin Flash Device”,
    • Garmin BaseCamp >> Maps >> Install Maps and there you go…

After that, feel free to do what you want with the created IMG File. I mean, you can share the IMG file; you can transfer the file to the microSD of your real device (using the memory card reader) or whatever.

Be advised, maps are installed on your 'Garmin Flash Device' with Ms 1 (sometimes) and locked, so you’re gonna need use GMapTool.

Just in case, you can transfer waypoints, tracks, etc., to your 'Garmin Flash Device', and then you can transfer the files via memory card reader to your real device. This is to avoid the SLOW transfer speed of the cable on eTrex devices. In fact, you can update *.gtt files (Text folder) and the Time Zone Map (gmaptz.img) of your 'Garmin Flash Device'.

NOTE 1: additionally you can copy the autorun.inf file on your microSD/SD card and the Garmintriangletm.ico file on the folder :\Garmin

    NOTE 2: if you have:

    • A computer with USB 3.0 ports,
    • The memory card reader is USB 3.0,
    • And the microSD is Class 10 (95MB/s),

So, the slow process will be the click on the mouse.

(*) if you want to use the same microSD card that you have on your real device to create the 'Garmin Flash Device', you will need to move the ‘x-file’ after install the maps. You will need to create a folder on your SD card called: “backup” (for example) to store the 'x-file' for a next use. The folder can't be inside the Garmin folder.

    Thanks for reading!

If Basecamp/Mapinstall are patched you can send maps to any drive, insert your etrex sd in card reader in pc and send.
    For unpatched Mapsource:

Thx catymag for the info, I've never patched Basecamp/Mapinstall my mistake

Is it possible to visualize maps from an SD card with a patched Basecamp/Mapinstall? (as if you were connected to your device?)
Is it possible download updates to an SD card with a patched Basecamp (via WebUpdater)? I mean *.gtt and *.img files (as if you were connected to your device?)

    Thx in advance!!

yes, the only difference is BC accepts maps unlocked by Jetmouse in pc (obviously img sent to device if FID is greater than 2200 will be locked in gps) and you can send img to any drive.
