How to backup favorites from a nuvi to your computer

Instructions for PC:

1. Connect the GPS unit to the computer
2. Go to the Start menu
3. Choose My Computer (or Computer for Vista and Windows 7)
4. Right-click the Garmin nuvi drive and select Open
5. Double-click the Garmin folder (For nuvi 1xxx series units skip this step)
6. Double-click the GPX folder
7. Right-click on the Current.gpx file
8. Choose Copy from the right-click menu
9. Right-click on any blank area on the desktop
10. Choose Paste to put a copy of it on your computer's desktop

Instructions for Mac:

1. Connect the GPS unit to the Mac
2. When you see the Garmin nuvi mounted to the desktop, double-click on it
3. Double-click on the Garmin folder (For nuvi 1xxx series units skip this step)
4. Double-click the GPX folder
5. Click once on the Current.gpx file
6. Go to the Edit menu at the top of the screen
7. Click Copy "Current.gpx"
8. Click any blank area on the desktop
9. Go to the Edit menu again
10. Click Paste Item

Now, if for some reason you need to put the file back onto the GPS unit, you will need to send it over to the GPS using a program.

For the PC, you will need MapSource which can be downloaded here:

To send the file back to the GPS using MapSource on a PC:

1. Connect the GPS unit to the PC
2. Go to the Start menu
3. Highlight All Programs (Or just Programs for Vista and Windows 7)
4. Highlight Garmin
5. Click MapSource
6. Click on the File menu
7. Select Open...
8. At the top where it says "Look in:", select Desktop
9. At the bottom where it says "Files of type:" select GPS eXchange Format (*.gpx)
10. Click on the Current.gpx file
11. Click Open
12. Click on the Transfer menu
13. Click Send To Device...
14. Select the GPS in the Device drop-down list.
15. Click Send
16. Unplug the GPS unit

To send the file back to the GPS using RoadTrip on a Mac:

1. Connect the GPS unit to the Mac
2. On the dock click on the Finder icon (it's the one that looks like a blue smiley face)
3. Click Applications on the left side of the window
4. Double-click on the Garmin RoadTrip.app
5. Click on the File menu at the top of the screen
6. Click Import...
7. On the left side of the window, click Desktop
8. Click on the file Current.gpx
9. Click Import
10. Click on the Transfer menu at the top of the screen
11. Click Send Folder to GPS
12. If it asks you if you would like to send maps, click Skip Maps
13. When the program is finished sending to the GPS drag the Garmin nuvi to the trash to dismount it
14. Unplug the GPS unit

The waypoints will now be listed in the Favorites section of the GPS unit.
