help Need to REPAIR a 3790T

After struggling with the GPS, I'm giving up.

When in use, a couple of weeks ago, the GPS turned itself off. The battery was not able to get any charge.

I went to EBAY, got a new one and changed it, following instructions provided by the video they sent. The video itself is also available on YouTUBE. Simple.

After installing the new battery, the GPS came to life and I was able to update some "favorites" - mainly deleting a few, used on the last trip.

However, after a few minutes, the battery died ! When I connect it to a USB port, nothing happens. No "connect sound" whatsoever. Same for a wall-to-USB charger - no light on the screen.

It seems that the charger circuit of the GPS is somehow burned. Does anyone care to comment ? I am in Brasil.

Try to connect the Device to usb with your old battery or no battery installed.
Maybe that New Battery of yours is causing the Problem.

When Installing New LION Battery you are supposed to Charge for 24 hours.
I find in all consumer electronics 6 hours is more than enough on a 1 Amp Charger.

Thanks, but connecting without the battery also gives me no sound at all.

Is the new Battery 3.7 Volts Lithium-Ion ?

Maybe another of the rare cases of kamikaze 37x0. I've seen a couple that cannot be coaxed back to life by any known method. But there are some other things to try:

First, do as Dasil suggested and leave it on charge for an extended time, up to 24 hrs, using a genuine Garmin charger if possible. If that's not available connect it to a rear USB of your PC for 24hrs and ensure the PC doesn't idle to sleep mode.

Then press and hold the power key for over 30 seconds before releasing.

The best and the fastest way to charge nuvi's battery is the wall to USB charger. For 3790 genuine's charger specs are 5V - 1A so any charger with these specs should do the job but as dasil mention you must let the battery charge for a while. If your new battery is drained then after a couple of hours of charging try to start your device by keeping the ON button for about 20 seconds to see if it comes to life.

Ooops Neil was faster than me ...
Mod. Note: LOL. First time for everything Mate. BTW, Dasil would have told him too if we hadn't.

One possibility that seems to not have been considered here is that the USB port on the nüvi may be the source of the problem. It's possible a broken pin on the port is preventing the device from working.

Possible, but improbable. He's experiencing difficulty both ways. Charging with genuine charger [mini USB of cradle] and connecting to PC via micro USB, so unlikely both ports or headers/leads are faulty.

    Thank you, guys.

I left the GPS on a wall-to-USB charger for almost a DAY. Nothing.

Also left on a computer USB for several hours. Nothing.

Disassembled again and checked the batteries: the old ZERO volts ; the new one 3.7 Volts.

This is the new one got from EBAY seller. It says 3.7 V lithium-polymer 1200mAh / 4.4 Wh. This is the one that brought the GPS back to life, for about 5 minutes.

My take, at this time, is that the internal electrical connection inside the GPS, between the battery and the main board, somehow broke ! The charge never gets to the device itself; never passes the battery.

I 'm looking for a service place in Brasil.

    Any comments ?

A couple of thoughts Carlos. Li-Ion and Li-Pol batteries are the same basic type of unit and can be used interchangeably [mostly]. In fact many batteries marked Li-Ion/Lithium-Ion are Li-Pol as the full name for Li-Pol is actually Lithium-Ion Polymer. Li-pol are lighter, mainly because the cells don't need a metal case as li-ion do.

I'm a little suspicious that your unit sprang back to life for ~five minutes. Your new battery has full voltage of 3.7 so the problem must be in the device itself and it seems to have been intermittent at least until now.
