I'm getting sick of Australians. Most of them sound like they have IQ's in the sub 70 range. I think I shall go back to Plan 8 From Outer Space and try to kill them all, with the exception of Foo who amuses us. I shall appoint him the Court Jester and cause him to be attired in a droll costume and summon him when we desire to be amused.

Of course we use the royal we for when the Queen realizes our greatness and annoints us King of this realm...and then she can go into the kitchen and cook up my favorite meals for me like a good Queen. She can cook, I hope, tho we will of course have staff for such things, but I feel that it is best if my Queen keeps her hand in in the kitchen and wielding the mop, or swab as they used to call it in the Navy. It will keep her from getting into mischief.

I moved to Subaru in the 90's after owning a few Pajeros when the kids were growing up. On my 5th Subi bla bla
I had an early Subaru, a '75. It burned down five miles from the Canadian border, thanks to those old fools on Academey Street and their carburetor rebuilding botched job, which I was nuts to do since I was really good at cleaning carburetors without even removing them from the car...oh that's right, I just remembered, I got a tank of bad gas at the Sears (yep Sears) gas station in Hicksville, LI that trashed the carb. Do Subarus still have horizontally opposed 4 cylinder engines, just like the Beetle except water cooled? They were good cars then.

I seem to recall the SLR's also had an issue with understeering, especially when under power, that I'd imagine resulted in some soiled underwear over the years, not sure if Holden ever fixed that or not.

Had a B4 twin-turbo, they get maligned but not for really valid reasons imo. Owned 2 Liberty GTs since then, current one is MY10. It's about same 0-100 as a GTHO believe it or not, mid 6's. Subi dropped the GT from the liberty range and replaced the hole with the Levorg, bit smaller but that's ok these days.
Yes I'd believe it, some of the newer cars are quick off the mark, no doubt about that.
Haven't been in a Liberty but a mate used to own a WRX, not sure how it'd compare with the latest models nowdays but it used to get up & go ok.
Don't like the sound of them newer cars much though, they sound like oversized blowflys when the foot goes down.
I like the old school V8 sound myself.

    Hardtop I owned:

Not a real good pic that one though, got better here somewhere, just gotta find them.

By golly Subaru still uses the flat 4 VW-style engine! I like that. I remember I had to make my own 17mm crowfoot socket to adjust the valves or something because I couldn't find one any place. It had a crude early automatic choke and other emission controls and I took them all off - it was pretty obvious how to do that then...now I wouldn't have a clue - and I installed a manual choke - and I increased the gas mileage by 7 MPG! It was a good car until that bad gas and then the finishing touch from those old slobs on Academy Street and their carb job, forgetting to tighten the clamp on the carb. I have pictures of it tooling through the sandy trails in the pine Barrens. It ran good there because it was narrow and had front wheel drive. Not as good as the VW Beetle, though, as the latter was lighter and had better ground clearance . I'll post the Subaru in the Barrens photos here if I get at least 50 participants sending me a polite request to do so. I am sorry but Australians are not allowed to participate.

I think Melvin's dub has been long crushed and probably reborn as a rusted Hyundai by now.

Does that Rainbow Bee Eater eat bees outta your hand though?

Why can't they all be as sharp and well-behaved as you Mac? I'll have to fix Mags' post up a little to comply with the decree, standby. He's a nice boy but a little slow i think. At least he's not intentionally obtuse with a broad and deep mean streak like that megalomaniac Melvin. Umm. Three M names and one N. N holds a higher position in the alphabet ..... but only by 1 place dammit! I really want Z's place now. Henceforth you two miscreant M's shall address me as Zeil. Mac you may call me 'mate', but only occasionally mind.

Please stay on topic or you'll be ridiculed, stripped naked and pelted with sticky animal poo, or forced to talk only to Melvin for a while [your choice of punishment, but pick the first - far less arduous].

'Flat' or 'boxer' horizontally-opposed engines are used in most light planes too, best known brands are Lycoming and Continental. More balanced and reliable than the older conventional and 'upside down' in-line engines like were fitted to Austers and Tiger Moths etc for instance.

The big advance of flat over inline engines in cars, whether the latter be straight thru or east west drive-chain, is the balance and low centre of gravity. Subaru took the flat idea and water cooled it initially as Melvin said. But over the years they've refined their engines to the point where they are as quiet and smooth as any inlines whereas VW largely abandoned Dr Porsche's idea and moved to inline. If they'd have partnered with Fuji heavy Industries instead and stuck with flat i reckon the bulk of new smaller automotive engines would now be horizontally opposed just like in the bulk of light plane production.

I learnt to drive on dirt roads in the bush in RWD cars and trucks and I still love the sound of a V8 Mac, but you can't beat the punch in the back 'POW' from a turbo boxer. Team that with low center of gravity and balance then combine with all wheel drive as good as has been done by Subi and it just makes for a joyous drive, even on curvy roads in the wet. Actually, especially so then. My turbo GT sounds anything but like a buzzbox although aurally it's no competition to a V8's rumble. A V8's music sounds like the bass section of an orchestra is under the bonnet ....that's a hood Melvin.
