    Axolotl!

    From MAD circa 1958:

    "I Wandered Lonely as a Clod"

    I wandered lonely as a clod,
    Just picking up old rags and bottles,
    When onward on my way I plod,
    I saw a host of axolotls;
    Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
    A sight to make a man's blood freeze.

    Some had handles, some were plain;
    They came in blue, red pink, and green.
    A few were orange in the main;
    The damnedest sight I've ever seen.
    The females gave a sprightly glance;
    The male ones all wore knee-length pants.

    Now oft, when on the couch I lie,
    The doctor asks me what I see.
    They flash upon my inward eye
    And make me laugh in fiendish glee.
    I find my solace then in bottles,
    And I forget them axolotls.

    I can't find a full size repro of that one. It's a takeoff on the ads that used to appear on the back page of comic books. I don't suppose you had that over there so you might not know what it was. That was the beauty of the early Mads, all the hilarious tiny small print and little gags up in the corners. There was a lot of work in them, a labor of love. Funny talented guys.

    BTW, as i'm expected to squire Tuffy around the gem show and perhaps even perform other basic tasks to please her then either she or you are required to at least pay my airfare over and all my accommodation and living costs. My standards are very high when other ppl are paying. Do you have any flophouses with better than half a star rating in that fleabitten village that can't even properly pronounce it's own name? Tucsón! Tut tut .... That'd be a 'hard C' in Spanish, ¿qué? Tukson or Tuxon as an English approximation. Never mind, i'll try to find a little time to educate the half breed inhabitants if Tuffy leaves me alone long enough thru' sheer exhaustion.

    Desist I say! Tucson is not a Spanish name. And yes we do have flophouses suitable for a man of your dignity. Enjoy your stay. Hourly rates.

    On researching it, Tucson is an English adaptation of the Spanish word Tucsón [pronounced with a hard C, i.e. a K sound] just as i thought and which was itself an adaptation of the Native American O'odham word 'Cuk Son', the C being pronouced 'ch' as in chip [tʃ], the U as 'oo' [ʊ], the K is just k .... aw, i'm boring you aren't i? I wasn't previously aware of the Native American root, only of the Spanish. So sayeth the Oracle Wikipedia, therefore we know it must be correct, don't we?:

    Like me, are you now wondering what it is in Klingon? Seems it's cha' puqloD from phonetic English 'two son' and can't be translated directly from either Tucson or Tucsón.

    Hourly rates you say? Sus as. I don't like having to check the pillows for syringes so guess i'll just crash at your place instead Melv, make up the spare bedroom.

    And that's the front cover of MAD #21 from March 1955 which I sent to you some time ago Melvin, you inglorious ungrateful dropkick. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    Good grief quit babbling won't you? But thanks for the Mad reminder...and how u can squeeze all that in one little thingamajing is amazing to me like white man's thunderstick. Now if u sent me Mads that were better clarity so that I could read the tiny fine print, which is the funniest part, then I would treat u with more respect, kemosabe. The importance of what is written is almost always in inverse proportion to the size of the print, even in Mad comic books.

    As for making things from rocks that's me Sydney mite's department. That's why she's coming to the Tuscan [sic] Mineral Show, to buy more rocks to make stuff out of.

    Score so far:
