5.5112 is an excellent choice for such an oldie.
But as long as you don't use SDHC cards you should be fine with your original - but using the 5.5112 won't harm you
I have a TomTom One XL (first generation)
Bootloader: 5.3026
Navcore: 8.01 on internal Memory
I would like to install Navcore 9.5 32MB external (1GB, no SDHC)
Do i then need a newer Bootloader? will 5.5112 screw booting old NC?

Hi,
I have tomtom one xl with navcore 9.170 and bootloader 5.5136. I bought micro sdhc 8GB Kingston. I copied content of internal memory to sdhc card and I added new maps Europe 890.4222. When I insert sdhc to tomtom, then tomtom want to eject this card. Without card tomtom boot normaly, but without map, because I have only 1GB internal storage. Can you advice me please? Thank you.
Won't help
The XL can only use one type of memory not like the GO models that utilise both.
1. Delete all from your SD - don't format!
2. Copy all files and folder from the internal emory to the SD
3. Check if the TT boots from SD, which it should.
4. Download and install a current 910 map, not a 890 map and use FastActivate to activate the new map.
5. Start the TT, it will show the old map.
6. Go into the menu, switch to the new map.
7. Enjoy

--------- Bootloader suggested
TomTom One V1/V2/V3/XL = 5.5242
I use 5.5244 for all tomtom ones
Hi all,
Slowly learning how to upgrade a TT ONE v3. Thanks for the BootLoader links. BootLoader 5.5274 does work with TT ONE v3.
