how do you create the gmapsupp.img file from mapsource?

By installing Mapsource and then open the Help File. It's clearly explained inside

I have just done it, its not that hard .. the only problem i have is the fact that I have to use the Keygen for each Garmin device I have, I cant seem to unlock the img (even though I downloaded and ran the tools)
I suppose it works either way

U can write all necessary unlock codes also in Mapsource.
So if you have 3 devices, just write all 3 unlock codes in Mapsource and all 3 unlock codes are transferred when ou generate the gmapsupp.img

First of all thank you for the maps. was looking allover for Angola coverage.
umm i was wondering - what is the difference between the TOPO/Citymap/DEM versions?

TMC is the one that supports Traffic updates based on receiver.
Topo & Rec as the name suggests has 20m contours (topographic) and recreational details e.g. camp sites etc. DEM has 200m contours and is like a trade off between TMC and Topo & Rec.
You have to navigate to get to the good.
