have you unlocked it? or have you the unlock file named like your new map in the same folder( eg. gmapprom1.img and gmapprom1.unl)?

I have not unlocked. The downloaded file is an img file. If I need to unlock, could you please link the instructions?
Root dir is on the device (no card). There are no unl files that I can observe. Root dir has the 3 files already there (for NA and Europe - not sure about the third); that's gmapbmap, gmapprom and gmapsupp. I HAVE NOT renamed the downloaded img file as any of the existing three. I simply tried additional names.
If I need to rename into one of the existing img files, which one should it be? will I lose any mapping capabilities? any other impact?
    Many thanks

You just need to read post one to understand maps names in your devices-
Your internal memory maps names are correct-
If the IMG you downloaded is locked use this before copying in your gps, no unl file will be needed-
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] , then rename it in an appropriate way-
As you have already CNEU and CNNA in your internal memory, should be better to put your new IMG in an sd-
Create a Garmin directory and put it inside and rename it gmapsup2.img, or ,in some new devices, create a folder named Map and rename your map xxx.img, where xxx is the name you prefere-

I copied my internal hardrive on the Nuvi250w to my PC, then deleted the contents and used MapSource to transfer a truncated set of North American maps to the GPS internal drive. The outcome is that I now have a different structure (all the files that used to be in the root directory are now in a GARMIN sub-directory). I then picked up a memory error when turning on the GPS, although the maps did load. I reset the user information by pressing the battery icon while booting (as recommended in one of the tuorials) and the memory error went away.

The GPS picks up the hard drive maps and the local RSA map on the SD card when I check which maps are loaded. However it shows the vehicle icon but no map when I try to navigate. I fear that I have overwritten some vital information, but for the life of me I cannot find guidance in the tutorials. Any help or advice gratefully received.

Connect your nuvi to PC and restore the backup you copied previously in nuvi internal memory. If your pc cant see your unit call Garmin support for help.

Does merging maps (i.e. in effect making them bigger) make the GPS operate more slowly? Currently already the maps load v. slowly on the screen.
    Tx.
