The tomtom has a SD card reader/writer built in the device (it writes and updates files such as mapsettings.cfg, itinerary and favourites) and can be used as an SD reader/writer when connected via USB so it is perfectly feasible that while the SD card was in the device either while updating the BL or after while rebooting that it malfunctioned and damaged the card causing the unallocated partition. Which is exactly what happened. The reason the SD card wouldn't work was because of the unallocated partition, without it, it works perfectly. That partition was not there before I updated the BL I had checked and if so the BL update would have failed as the device would have been unable to read the SD card. It was there immediately after and was thus not recognised in tomtom.

The moment it rebooted after the BL update it did not work and I didn't put in the PC in between so it couldn't have affected it at all. I've been updating Roms and building programming and repairing systems for over 25 years so perfectly understand about formatting an SD card but thank you for your advice.

I am aware that under normal circumstances it cannot create partitions intentionally but as it is a writer and the card wasn't locked it could have malfunctioned and caused the problem causing the damage to the card. Thanks for reply but your assumption is incorrect because as i said the fault occurred when the card was not in the PC, the sequence of events i described show that.

Hopefully if other users encounter the same issue with a faulty SD reader/writer in their tomtom damaging their SD card they can fix it in the manner I have.

Thank you both again for your comments and hopefully it may help others if needed.

Confirmed using a TomTom One XL. You have to do a cold boot the first time (hold on/off button until you hear the TomTom drums or insert pin into RESET keyhole if your TomTom has one).
Also, the TomTom One XL reads EITHER the internal memory OR the SD/SDHC card. This means that if you want to use a map from the SD/SDHC Card you have to copy all of the system files to the card.

Absolutely correct. This applies similarly to all pre x20 models like the x00's, x10's (510/710), Ones & One XL's

This is not right. I have a G0730 with internal memory and also a sd card slot. If the internal memory is full you can use a map from sd card without copying system files to memory.

It IS correct (see my previous post) because your device like x20/x40/x50's CAN use either and/or both as you say but NOT the older models.

    I have problem.
I use bootloader from first post 5.5120 and i put into TOMTOM One and everithing is ok for now, read SDHC 16GB UHSP+.
I also successfully upgraded TOMTOM Go 710 with same old SD card, which I previously used for TOMTOM one to upgrade bootloader.
After two times turn off TT Go 710 now i can't turn on ;(
I don't have usb for 710, can't connect to PC, it upgraded maps previously with SD card.
I see green led when i conect to charger, but when i disconect led turned off.
Tried with reset button and nothing.
I think it not charging, or something else.

    What can I do?

These x10 series need a power lead plugged into the side of the cradle. The cradle is only to connect to your PC for data transfer, not power. See [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] for a typical cradle but you still need the power lead plugged into it to charge the device

Did you copy everything from the old 710 card (apart from the new bootloader file) onto your new card?

I dont have that item from ebay, I have gps with vacuum holder and auto charger, without usb and SD card, my friend gave it to me.
I found old 512MB SD card from broken WinCE GPS and I delete all file in root SD.
Just put "system" file into empty SD and put in TOMTOM ONE and bootloader is successfully upgraded, after that i put new navicore and everything working.
In the meantime i put same empty SD card with only "system" file in the root into Go710 and i see loading, after few seconds i turn off and when i check i saw bootloader is successfully upgraded.
I reset GPS 2-3 times without SD after that to check booloader again bacause i want to me 100% sure is everything ok.
And I never turned on after that. Baterry is bad on my Go710 and maybe for that when i uprade bootloader probably the battery was weak and destory proces or somethink like that.
I do whole proces without with empty SD only with system file.

I charge Go 710 around 12 hours and nothing, i can't turn on and when i pull out charger led turned off

Is there any chance to repair this device?

It does sound like the battery is dead so you could try changing it but, is it worth your time and effort? [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Remember a green light only shows power getting to the device, not automatically getting to the battery or charging it.

I think problem is solved for now.
I just pull out baterry and put into charger and navigarion work.
When I put back baterry navigation doesnt work, i do that 2-3 times and press reset button and work for now.
