The tomtom has a SD card reader/writer built in the device (it writes and updates files such as mapsettings.cfg, itinerary and favourites) and can be used as an SD reader/writer when connected via USB so it is perfectly feasible that while the SD card was in the device either while updating the BL or after while rebooting that it malfunctioned and damaged the card causing the unallocated partition. Which is exactly what happened. The reason the SD card wouldn't work was because of the unallocated partition, without it, it works perfectly. That partition was not there before I updated the BL I had checked and if so the BL update would have failed as the device would have been unable to read the SD card. It was there immediately after and was thus not recognised in tomtom.

The moment it rebooted after the BL update it did not work and I didn't put in the PC in between so it couldn't have affected it at all. I've been updating Roms and building programming and repairing systems for over 25 years so perfectly understand about formatting an SD card but thank you for your advice.

I am aware that under normal circumstances it cannot create partitions intentionally but as it is a writer and the card wasn't locked it could have malfunctioned and caused the problem causing the damage to the card. Thanks for reply but your assumption is incorrect because as i said the fault occurred when the card was not in the PC, the sequence of events i described show that.

Hopefully if other users encounter the same issue with a faulty SD reader/writer in their tomtom damaging their SD card they can fix it in the manner I have.

Thank you both again for your comments and hopefully it may help others if needed.

Confirmed using a TomTom One XL. You have to do a cold boot the first time (hold on/off button until you hear the TomTom drums or insert pin into RESET keyhole if your TomTom has one).
Also, the TomTom One XL reads EITHER the internal memory OR the SD/SDHC card. This means that if you want to use a map from the SD/SDHC Card you have to copy all of the system files to the card.

Absolutely correct. This applies similarly to all pre x20 models like the x00's, x10's (510/710), Ones & One XL's

This is not right. I have a G0730 with internal memory and also a sd card slot. If the internal memory is full you can use a map from sd card without copying system files to memory.

It IS correct (see my previous post) because your device like x20/x40/x50's CAN use either and/or both as you say but NOT the older models.

I replaced the system file with the one provided here but when I put in a 16GB card it shows this for about a minute and then it shuts off.
I don't really know what it's supposed to be on the 16GB card, I have to be missing something here, if you replace a file on a the original card and then remove the card from the GPS how exactly is the thing going to know what it's supposed to do.

Once you've booted up the device for the first time with the new bootloader (on an original card or from internal memory), the unit will then always boot up with that bootloader so maybe you need to reformat your SDHC & reload the patched navcore(software) & cracked/activated maps etc & try again.

Thanks you so much. I did format the card as FAT32 but still doesn't read anything other that a 1GB SD card.
It is indeed a Rider v2.
Where do I see which Bootloader I'm using?

Nearly the last menu you must have an icon information or word similar.
Or press the on/off button as long till you get a black screen with the same information in white

Bootloader 5.5279 you'll find it here
    ftp://All_Available_Maps:All_Availab...%20v5.5279.rar

Mind you when you do the update, don't run out of power during the proces
Full charge the battery and for sure use your power supply, it's done into a few seconds
