TMC works with every NC now that we know what files are required, however on some NC's the old V13 receiver (and older) are not fully working anymore.
Affects not all devices and changing the NC often works fine.
You'd have to update your bootloader for SDHC support but for the NC you should be fine.
You don't go back - you make a backup using Windows Explorer (NOT TT Home!), that's called a backup
If anything does not work out you delete all files and copy your backup files on the device, all back to the old.

I did mention that I had made a full back up to do precisely that,

What I was worried about was the bootloader getting updated as I thought that you couldn't downgrade that.
My device has no sd slot so I wouldn't intentionally upgrade the bootloader for that function.

So am I right to think the only way I would update the bootloader unintentionally would be updating through TomTom Home? ( which shouldn't happen as it doesn't offer me a new NC above what I already have)
I just didn't know if updating the navcore also updated the bootloader using the method in this thread, which is what I wanted to understand before proceeding. Can you just put me straight on that?

    Many thanks for your help

Home includes a bootloader for every NC that is for your device (and if needed).
If you use a NC from a forum or patch a CAB yourself a newer BL could be installed if not carefull.
All BL up to 5.5128 are considered to be safe for any TT as we never got any negative feedback in that regards.
And in case it becomes necessary the BL can be downgraded.
So you have nothing to loose with a working backup

Thank you so much for the reply. I know I might sound a bit overcautious but with things like this I try to make sure I understand what I'm doing and there is a way to fix things if something goes wrong.
    Thanks again

Doesn't appear to work with my GO910 and 9.430; did with 9.026 and 9.051 but your 9.430 is stable so I use it.

If you want to have TMC working with the 9.430 replace the mctx.dat file in the root of your device with the one from the 9.051.
It is a know problem to TT that older devices loose TMC reception on this NC.
I guess your uninformative description of the problem means you got the traffic bar but even after 15 minutes still no traffic info, still searching for a station?
If so the above should fix it.

Nope, no traffic bar with 9.430 from "9.430 for GO models" in post #3. Unlike 7.910, 8.xx, 9.026, 9.051 which did show the traffic bar (and work).

I have a Tomtom XL Canada 310 4ET0.002.02. Your 9.430 for XL & full backup work fine in self mode. Thanks for that. But does anyone know how I can get any of the other emu to work with sound?

Most likely not at all on a XL as there are hardware restictions that can be solved with my versions based on DSA.
As for the X10 models it is a matter of testing, some V9 NC's give you more other won't work at all.
If you use a NC with a SE ttsystem adjusting the switchfiles is a must as you won't get results otherwise.

And again : The best NC is always what Home offers as an official update - all other NC might work fine but there can't be a guarantee.
The NV with the highest version number is not always the best either.
All V9 NC's offer similar features, main difference to the V8 is the 3pane status bar - not more...
Only the 9.4xx NC offer new options for the speedcams which is not really that important anyway.
So if you have a older device and you are after reliable navigation and not the latest gimmiks it might be good to use a trusted V8 like the 8.412, 8.562 or the 8.398 instead of a V9.
Especially 32mb models will benefit from the memory savings and can often use computervoices as well.
