We have already got €16 held by Carl Mai and "imlost" from the other forum (or another name here) is interested plus, maybe pietu too so you could actually scrape enough together guys?

Nesting can be a problem as each map MUST be in its own folder in the root of the device
"cannot use this map blah blah" usually means the map isn't activated. Check to see if there is (as needed) a meta.dct file in the map folder.

If you're referring to the 945 Android map please confirm, step by step, where from & how you downloaded/installed this

Well after several days of stuffing about, with various maps, including the Android (6256),
I am now trying to get Aust. 940-5963 working.
FastActivate seems to think everything is a go.
There is a "Australia-100198.meta.dct" file in the map folder, but the same old story "You cannot use this map on this device"
Where to go from here please?

As I say, normally that message means the map's not activated BUT if you've got the new meta.dct then it IS activated.
Did you also patch navcore F/A option #3

Try another copy of the Android map from
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

yes, the navcore is patched, and yes, I thought given the meta.dct it should work.
It is after midnight here, so I have begun the download of the link you posted, and I'll try it in the later morning.
I assume all I need to do is delete the existing map folder, and unpack the new one into the device root, then run F.A.?

Yes, basically unpack/unzip/unrar the download to create the new map folder then replace old map folder with new map folder. Some say you should delete the meta.dct already in the Android map folder then run LATEST F/A too although I don't normally but it must be worth a try (ps instal LATEST F/A directly into this new map folder & run from there)

"W8"..... if you mean the characters next to the barcode on the base.
It is the skinny unit that plugs onto a fixed base, and has the power button on the top of the unit, on the rhs.

So, I followed your instructions to the letter & here are the results.

After unpacking the map into the root, and F/A/ into the new map folder, there was a .dct file present, BUT,
F/A did not recognise any map as being present.

I then deleted the .dct file, ran F/A again, and agin it did not see any map present, and it did not create a new .dct file
Of course TT give the same message, cant use this map.

I then deleted that map, then installed Australia 940-5963
    No ,dct file present.
Ran F/A from within the map folder, .dct file created, ans F/A sees it as a current map.
TomTom returns message, "you can't use this map on this device"
W.T.F. am I doing wrong here?

Out of frustration, I deleted both maps, then re-installed them both.
    Both had .dct files present.
Ran F/A from within each map file.
F/A sees both maps as present and OK
TomTom still says, "cant use this map blah blah" for both maps.
1 step away from flushing this thing down the toilet ;-(

    EDIT:
After yet more reading today, I keep seeing references to a file called mapsettings.cfg
so I look in both of the map folders currently on the device, and no such file exists in either.
A quick peek into a map that I had on my pc revealed that it DOES have that file.
I have no idea if that is relevant, but thought best to inform.

    EDIT:
Tried putting the mapsettings.cfg file from the pc into the device map folders, made no difference, so I guess not relevant.
    after all.

Where to go next with you GO 550...?

You could try running clearflash.exe 3 times from [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Re the mapsettings.cfg, this is only saving previous settings like recent destinations, sounds, voices etc but some find deleting this file can help (although as you say, there wasn't one initially anyway)

If F/A created a dct it must have found your ttgo.bif and you say your navcore is deffo patched already

Soooo.... either ALL the maps you're trying are incomplete/corrupted/nested or your navcore 9.510 is incomplete/corrupted.

Sorry to "state the bleedin' obvious" but it has to be one or the other.

How about grabbing a clean copy of the official 9.510 from [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] then copy/paste/overwrite onto your root then run F/A option 3 to patch it
