? Map folder query on a ONE XL

I have a One XL v1 (32mb RAM version with 1gb internal storage and SD card slot). The unit recently had all files on its internal memory but I have copied all files over to a 2gb SD card.

I have installed the latest version of TT HOME and let it update the navcore to v8.010 (9369/080529 - btw -what do the numbers mean?!). I have also manually updated the bootloader to v5.5242. The unit currently has the prehistoric Western_Europe_1GB v715.1689 which I'm wanting to update to a mapset which is compatible with the 8.010 Navcore. I have downloaded Western_Europe_1GB(910.4952) mapset and want to install and activate it using Fast Activate.

However, before I do that, I would be grateful for some clarity on map folders. I have a folder on the SD card called 'Western_Europe_1GB' with all map, speedcam, POI data files etc in. BUT, I also have a folder called 'maps' which has a single file in it called "Western_Europe_1GB.tlv". Standard procedure is, prior to attempting to transfer the new map folder and files and attempting any activation, you should "Delete the old map folder.". My question is simply: I assume I should delete the folder entitled 'Western_Europe_1GB' (after all, this is the folder for the map! ) but....what should I do re the other folder called 'maps' with the .tlv file in which clearly relates to the currently installed map?

If left in place, will a new .tlv file relating to the new map be created as part of the Fast Activate routine to replace the old one? If deleted, will the unit look for a .tlv similar .tlv file relating to the new map? Anything I should pay particular attention to when trying to use Fast Activate or any order of steps recommended?

Sorry if I'm being dumb but just want to be clear before I proceed.

PS. I've found a 16gb SDHC card lying about. Once I've sorted the above out and got it working satisfacorily, I'd like to upgrade to the v9.170 SE Navcore and use a larger, more fully featured mapset with IQRoutes, ALG, ASR, TTS, HNR etc. I know it's overkill as the mapset I want to use is 2-3gb but...will the unit, now it has the 5.5242 bootloader, read/see/run from a 16gb SDHC (class 4) card? Or is the limit 4gb?

PPS. I assume that, now I have transferred all from from the unit's internal memory to the SD card, I can delete all files on the unit without fear of the unit being unable to read and run from the SD card and thus render me in unbootable and unusable territory..?!

Thanks to all those who can help. Any advice very gratefully received..!

I personally don't like crossposting over several forums....
There are all up to date NC's with memory boost available in my downloads, so why use a 9.170?
And you only need a current map, no other map folder, they are only infos for Home.

fully agree with Downunder35m - you got answer on another forum. And there - another hint. Nobody's going to repeat given answers here.
    Good luck

Thanks very much to you both. Absolutely no offence intended at all - I hear what you say and will heed the advice given.

For info, I have managed to update the mapset to 910.4952. Now need to roadtest it. Thanks greatly for your advice and guidance - I have learnt and am still learning a lot. This is my first satnav unit (as you've probably realised given my naivety and unintentionally poor etiquette) and I'm beginning to see that the weird and wonderful world of TomTom GPS systems takes a lot of learning and reading. I'm up for the challenge as I further explore the limits of my 'antique' unit. Once again, apologies for acting like a naive newbie. Lesson learnt..

Just play around with different Navcores and update with the next map release, you will notice is is getting easier every time.
It is all just copy and paste plus FastActivate in the end

    Red face

Well, I don't know about getting easier but certainly learning fast..! And encountering problems as I do so too!

So, in the spirit of adventure and learning suggested by downunder's encouragement to try out new Navcores, I bit the bullet and did a clean install on the 16gb SDHC card, using
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
downunder's installer for Navcore 9.510. Installed the memory boost version for 32mb models. Also loaded the 910.4892 Europe mapset and patched both with the latest FastActivate. So far, so good.

Then...I turned the unit on to find (in common with many other XL users, I think) a message to say that my chosen voice couldn't be used and in a subsequent message that no voices could be used and that I therefore wouldn't be able to hear any navigation instructions. Having read (too!) many threads previously, I know this is a common occurrence but simply couldn't find any clear advice as to what to do next.

So...not wanting to return with a problem without having first tried to fix it myself, I copied across the voices folder (weirdly - or perhaps not - there is/was no voices folder in the root present, only a LoquendoTTS folder) from the SD card containing a working install (NC 8.010) and yes, I now have the choice of these 'old' voices. However, I'd like to know if there is someway to fix the problem of no computerised TTS voices.

Also, and yes I know this is a dumb newbie question which I'm almost bound to get flamed for, but...could someone please point me to a link showing exactly how to install both additional 'normal' computer voices and especially the 'computerised' TTS voices - I am going boggle-eyed with all this reading and simply can't find the instructions.

    Many many thanks. Again..!

Note by Super MOD: Forum links to competitors if the English would not be allowed Use at least the TAG CODE.
Thanks to both for the understanding

If you check the installe carefully you might notice a version with "soundfix" - might worth a try ?
Remember to have the Loquendo folder with your voices already on the device, if copying it over after the NC installation you will overwrite the patched sound files.

Oh dear! Either I'm not doing something right (highly likely!), I'm not understanding something (ditto!) or I'm just not that smart (no comment..!) but I can't seem to get the computer voices to work.

I can get 'normal, recorded voices' to work by placing the 'Voices' folder (from a NC8.010 backup) in the root diectory of the SD card.

I did as you suggested (at least I think this was your suggestion!) and placed the Voices folder I mentioned above in the root dir of the SD card prior to installing the sound fix version of the NC via the installer - no joy.

you said to "Remember to have the Loquendo folder with your voices already on the device". Have to admit a bit confused by that instruction. I'm trying to do a clean install on an SD card. I have no Loquendo folder from any previous install, only the 'Voices' folder I mentioned above.

    What am I missing?

If it helps at all, I can see 2 greyed out computer voices if I select English (US) as the language, and a few normal voices. If I select English (UK) as the language, the computer voices disappear but more normal, recorded voice options are present.

My brain is fried! Any help very gratefully received...

Loquendo voices are the computer voices - if you have no LoquendoTTS folder with voices in it than you simply won't have any computer voices to select from

Ah. In that case I probably have misunderstood. I thought your NC already came with some computerised voices (not sure where I got that idea from - probably from another of the very many threads I've been reading trying to work this out!).

So....I guess I need to try and install some computerised voices - will try to find some to download and try but not sure where they are?! Will keep looking...

How exactly should I go about doing this and does it matter whether they are v6 or v7 devices (I think I read somewhere that v6 voices are less RAM intensive so better suited to older, low RAM unit like my ONE XL)?

Thanks again for your help and advice. It really is appreciated

Update: Found the English Kate cab file. Extracted it directly into the LoquendoTTS folder and it now appears (and works - at least in 'test' mode) as an option when English UK is selected as the langauge. Need to test this out on the road but didn't you say "Remember to have the Loquendo folder with your voices already on the device, if copying it over after the NC installation you will overwrite the patched sound files." Still a bit confused...
