Before installing the cracked version, you must install the google play version , start and uninstall .
    then put the cracked version.

Thanks for the reply, I have installed the original before installing the patched version and it doesn't make any difference. I have tried installing on a Galaxy s4 running stock Lollipop I9505XXUHOJ2 as well as on a Galaxy S1 running a custom omni rom based on lollipop 5.1.1 and get the same results.
I appreciate that v1.4 of the app is different but it works no probs on both phones.

Install and run original application before.
If it's not good, I can't help you, sorry
This procedure is good on my HTC One M7 and LG Gpad 8.3

I have the S4+ and it works (except a few crashes)

I sometimes have to force the app to close(at startup..to get rid of spinning waiting circle) by using taskmanager. The next time I start it up..it usually works.
I think it has something to do with waiting for the GPS signal (you can also test to disable GPS to see if the app will go past the wait screen).

you can also test by first running the app "GPS Status & Toolbox" and afterwards (when you got a lock on your location) start up Tomtom

Test Tomtom's app from the google store first..if you can't get it past the screen..something is wrong.

Are you ok with the 1.8 now?
    Does it still work?

Thanks for all the replies it's much appreciated, I get the 'cannot connect to tomtom server message' error message with the playstore version as well. The wife is gone off to Worcester Christmas market today and taken the S4 phone with her so I cannot play with that at the moment. As for the S1...I have given up trying on that one as I think I have exhausted every avenue. I will have no time this week for the S4 but will certainly keep on trying.

Do you have an antivirus/firewall installed in your S4?

Thanks for the suggestion but no firewall installed. To be honest both the S1 and S4 are generally just used as phones with everything switched off apart from location when used as a satnav. I generally keep everything internet related confined to the pc....the screen is bigger and easier to read at my age.
I consider myself to be very computer literate but haven't taken an interest, as such, in phones.
However, in the case of installing this software, I did remember to turn everything back on again including data, wi-fi and everything else, the only thing I do not have is a google account as if I want anything from the playstore I use apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/ or similar.
