Most of the talk here about metadata.xml is nonsense.......

Half way through this thread, someone's made this version work by running the app on the internal storage 1st and then copying the entire "com.tomtom.x" folder from internal storage to ext sdcard (but they've also missed a key bit).

The reason this package doesn't work is because there are files missing from the "files" folder in the torrent that you are downloading!

Running the app on device memory creates "currentmap.dat" & userpatch.dat" in the files directory ......... "currentmap.dat" NOT "metadata.xml" is the file that tells your device where to look for the map data ....... without this file, all you'll get is messages about not being able to connect to TomTom!

The missing bit is amending the path in "currentmap.dat" to match where the files are on the ext sdcard - after hours of messing about trying to follow instructions here - I now have this working on both KitKat and Lollipop on a Galaxy 5.

    Good this...............seems a joke.......
..... especially if you have KitKat not root ......

Solved hundreds help requests just by copying Metadata.xlm file in the right folder (Com.tomtom.xxxx or into Files folder for KK...)

Maybe if you go back and read some of my previous post, you will understand that what I say is absolutely right !

I solved the install of TomTom on my Galaxy Tab4 7 inches with KitKat 4.4.2 on SD card likes this:

    1-install TomTom on internal memory
2-Start it to verify it is OK
3-Install "FolderMount" available on the play store
4-Add a pair between the folder TomTom on internal and a folder on SD card.
    5-Validate and reboot
6-After reboot the transfer of the file iniciate
7-When finish, add a spindle in the "FolderMount" app. He must became green.
8-Start TomTom normally: no change for the user but the TomTom app is on the SD card !

    Enjoy

Working perfectly in my rooted Samsung Note 3 Lollipop 5.0 (Poland release). I did exactly like your instructions and it worked flawlessly. I even paid for the pro version of FolderMount to transfer the files of photos and other huge "things" to the SDCard. But it is important to say that the stuff is really transferred to the external memory though its structure persists in the internal memory, which can be easily seen when we compare the sizes of the internal and external memory after the FolderMount finishes its work. Another remark is that when it seems to be frozen before we can validate the transfer of data, FolderMount is moving the content to the external memory, which in my case, meant a significant amount of seconds. Thank you very much for the sharing of this brilliant and simple app.
