Default Should I take advantage of the free Windows 10 upgrade?

Sorry to post off-topic but just thought I'd ask some of you experts out there.

I'm very happily running Windows 7 Home Premium on a desktop PC but the offer of the free upgrade to Windows 10 expires this week. Most PC software websites seem to recommend the switch but maybe they're paid to do that so I would like personal opinions & experiences from "real" users, thanks.
So....my questions and your own opinions/experiences please:-
    1. Is it worth the hassle (just cos it's new) as I only use my PC for web browsing/emails etc (and of course playing with TT's) and I don't 'game' or even skype etc?
    2. I understand that there's a one month window of opportunity to roll back to my Windows 7 if I'm not happy but is it really that easy to do as they say?
    3. I understand that support will end for Windows 7 in 2020 (or is it 2018) but does that really matter too much?
    4. I'm already running Malwarebytes plus some other PRO utilities from IObit so I'm pretty comfortable with my current security.
    5. I use SRWare Iron as my main browser as I reckon it's light & quick rather that IE or Firefox or Google Chrome so I'd like to keep using this.

I'm sure I'll think of other things maybe after reading a few replies/opinions so thanks in advance

    Hi Dave
    1) IMHO yes, a non supported Os is not safe, 10 after modding it a bit is better than 7, but needs a bit of work.
    2) No problem to roll back to 7.
    3) see point 1
    4) IMHO now Slimjet browser is better than Iron, try it

Getting other feedback basically saying there's nothing wrong with Windows 7 so why bother.
Any other users with opinions please??

PS Caty, I'm trying Slimjet but not really much difference to SRWare Iron (which you put me onto) as they're both slimmed down Chromes? Why is Slimjet better than SRWare Iron as I can't really see much difference or speed??

In my opinion SJ is better, better translation service, faster.
SJ's ad blocker is compiled in. This makes it much faster than an addon can be.
SJ allows you to turn off search redirects. Google directs your clicks on search hits through its servers so they can rank pages - and, presumably, build a salable profile on you. That's a small step that's eliminated by enabling the block in SJ, which will help speed things up a bit, and help privacy as well.
The toolbar in Slimjet is fully customizable. You can add additional buttons to expose more features.
You can disable WebRTC to Prevent IP Leakage.
And more... but look at SJ settings to see everything.

About Win 7, nothing wrong now, but at the end of support you wont get security updates and this is not good at all.
It's like driving an old 2009 car, if it had all its car services it can run fine, but a 2016 car would be better

Had to do the questionnaire, most will vote for Windows 7
Windows 10 has a lot of espionage. The choice of what anyone wants to use is individual and depends on the user.
    Sorry for my English.

Take an image of your present setup before you upgrade to 10 and take Caty's advice if you're paranoid about spying [i am too, have have nuked it ]. Part of the upgrade offer is if you're not happy you've got a month to roll-back. If you don't like 10 [you will like it i reckon] and want to go back to 7 then just roll-back. If the roll-back goes south then use the image to restore anyway. Seems a no-brainer to me ......

Thanks Neil, another angle to consider I guess. I really am getting conflicting responses (incl from "my other forum") so will just sit back & let them flow for another day or so
    cheers

Ah Caty. I've said this before, but as even more time goes by i believe you may-well be my long-lost daughter because we think so alike. My philosophy in life has always been to embrace change and enjoy the ride. Sometimes it turns out to be a roller-coaster experience, a lot of yelling and screaming, sh*ting of pants, bruising ups and downs and just ending up back exactly where you started from before you know it and no better off. That's the risk of the compulsive early adopter and i've learnt to be a little more tardy in taking up new technology straight away. Same as i've learnt never to buy a totally new Ford model immediately after its release, they usually have more bugs than a hobo's blanket and for a while it spends as much time in the workshop having the mods done than it does on the road [ok, slight exaggeration but it does p*ss me off when they use their customers as beta testers]. Better to buy one about 12 months into the model life when everything's sorted and the dealers will be keener to giveaway more on the price too.

Now here's the thing. Microsoft has run the insider program for yonks, not just foisted an immature OS on the unsuspecting public:
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
I got onboard back when the insider program first started in late 2014. Like the buggy new Fords i'd bought over the years, also very buggy and with a rough finish. No problem because the preview 10 was in a VM and not my 'daily drive' but i liked what i saw. The only thing that kept me from updating my Win 8.1 earlier than i did was the lack of Media Center, it was in the initial insider build but then *poof*! It disappeared. Thanks to the smart guys from My Digital Life forums i added WMC to my Win 10:
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
First tried the one lifted from 8.1 and then the one from the early 10 Preview Build, both work fine. So much for M$ saying it's unsupported, i just hope they don't manage to bomb MC on 10 with later upgrade patches. Presently i'm also running a clone [not an imaged copy] of my Win 8.1 on a small SSD in a multi-boot setup with my Win 10 upgraded over my original Win 8.1, no problems so far but i wonder what will happen after 29th July. Maybe the cloned 8.1 will die.

Now think about this in context with Caty's 'moving cheese': For all those who say they'll have to pry the mouse from your cold dead hand before you'll give up your beloved Win 7 which could have been upgraded to 10 for nix before this coming Friday. How about when your MO burns out/HDD dies etc etc on your present PC? You can't buy a new PC with Win 7 on it. MS have finally learned a thing or two about human nature, there'll be no big revolutions in OSs in the future, only incremental evolution. No big hoo-ha and scaremongering by so-called experts claiming what you've got is better than what's had billions of dollars spent and world-best IT brains spend millions of hours to develop, like what happened with previous OS progressions. No Siree! Window 10 is it we're told. That should keep the scaremongers firmly in their holes i reckon. Evolution not revolution is a better opiate for the masses than religion. It's not often i quote Marx .... .
