Thanks Caty, is this really needed or just paranoia about Windows spying as it does appear to be a very aggressive tool to a layman like me?

Yes very aggressive tool and must be careful on how to use it. Before clicking anything in it, read carefully and understand what are you doing.
It depends on taste, I don't like MS spies all I do
Note: it's a beta version, work in progress it can have bugs. You can follow its development here:This post requires you to click the "LIKE this post" button and hit F5 to read this content.

I'm a bit worried about ruining a pretty good set-up I now have by playing too much with something I really don't know much about or understand and I'm seeing alternatives (some even with back-up facilities too) here

These dont work with Redstone release if you have a Home or Pro version, probably they work with Enterprise version.
At least these don't remove telemetry. MS locked Redstone.

    Thanks again Caty,
I'm currently "just" on Version 1511 (OS Build 10586.545) Windows 10 Home so do I need to still be concerned?

Sorry for all these questions which just proves how ignorant I am about this stuff.

I delayed updates for the moment-
    Settings/Windows Update/Advanced Options/ unchecked Delay Updates.
It will delay Anniversary for at least two months.

I don't have that option "/unchecked Delay Updates" maybe cos I'm just running the "normal" Home version which was the free update from Win7 rather than a full/clean install?

I discovered Windows 10 Pro users can defer updates, but Home users donít have that luxury sorry.
But if you are on wifi you can fool Windows 10 into thinking youíre on a non-broadband connection.(i.e. accessing the internet via a tethered mobile) and delays downloading and installing updates. To turn this on, click Start, and type 'Change Wi-Fi settings'. Hit enter. Click 'Advanced options' and toggle 'Metered connection' to on. This only works if youíre on a wireless network. If you have an Ethernet connection, the option isnít available.
Anyway make a full image backup with programs like Acronis or Terabyte drive image backup, you'll be able to go back to your configuration if needed.
