    Hello,
Any kind soul out there care to assist a newbie Garmin user? I've used the search function on this board, but I can't find any relevant threads about this. Anyway, here we go:

I have a Garmin etrex Vista HCx and mapsource 6.16.1 (patched). I also have several topo maps installed: Topo Adventure Norway and a couple of the Swedish equivalents. The maps are unlocked and installed on my GPS unit and they work fine. The Norwegian one is routable; the routes I create automatically follow both marked and unmarked trails in mapsource. But when try to use them in my GPS unit, they don't follow the trails anymore - the routes are shown with straight lines between the plotted points. I've tried to uncheck the 'Lock on Road' option.

Is it supposed to be like this? Will the routes lock onto the trails when I actually am at the place and start to navigate? Or do I have to manually follow the trailes between my waypoints?

    Thanks for any help

did you mark checkbox in Mapsource to send routing data ?
may be have you set your vista to route off road ?

Hey Caty, thanks for your swift reply!
If you mean the checkbox in the dialogue for sending maps/routes/waypoints in mapsource - yes, I did and the routes do show up in my Vista. They just don't stick to the trails on the Topo map ... weird huh
I tried setting the Vista to both on and off road. I made another observation - when I change the colour of routes in the GPS unit, it doesn't actually change the colour on the downloaded routes ...

I asked an expert, he said:
I think he expect downloaded routes to be on road or on trail. Mapsource send routes as a waypoints. he have to activate route to make vista recalculate it. then it should be on trail or as a straight lines, depending on chosen option.

Thanks again for your help Caty, I greatly appretiate it!

I'm not sure how to activate the route on my Vista though ... I've only tried the 'Go to' function within the Routes menu, maybe the 'Navigate' option will actually recalculate the routes but I'm nowhere near the place where I put my routes so I'll have to wait until I go there or make other routes, closer to my place.

Anyway, I found a workaround. There are probably better ways of doing it, but this is how I got it to work so far:

    1. Plot my routes in Mapsource and open them in Google Earth.
    2. Save the 'place' as a kmz file, which saves the routes as tracks.
    3. Go to gspvisualizer.com and upload and convert to gpx file
    4. Open in Mapsource to show the tracks and then send them to the GPS unit and then use the TracBack function to navigate the tracks.

    my friend said:
yes. good. but routing on track is not the same then routing on route.
if he'd like to test routes, than he can turn receiver off and go in simulation mode. Then on satellite screen he can start menu and set new current position. I'm not sure about details, how to do it on vista.

Ah, that makes sense! Thanks again Caty, I just tried that and it works like a charm
For other Vista users with the same problem as I had:

    1. Go to the Satellite acquiring screen (menu > menu > satellite > enter)
    2. Turn GPS off (menu > 'Use with GPS off' > enter)
    3. Set new location in 'GPS off mode' (menu > 'New location' > enter > follow on screen instructions)
    4. Exit satellite screen and enter main menu, choose 'Routes' and use the normal procedure to choose a route. Follow on screen instructions to navigate the route on demo mode.

I used the 'Follow road' option and the GPS now automatically routes on the map.
