unlocker Garmin Image Unlock gimgunlock up to v.0.03+MapSigPatch

Gimgunlock developed by wuyongzheng is yet another tool to unlock Garmin map files in IMG format. Although this tool exists since 2009, even with open source code available, it is almost unknown to the Garmin community. With the help of GPSPower, we hope it will have a new and bright future.

    Features of gimgunlock:

    * Direct Modification - unlike other tools which use GMapTool to split an image file, unlock each tile, then join all tiles; this tool unlocks all tiles in an image file directly without splitting and joining. Therefore, you should back up your original map first before running this tool.

    * Super fast speed - The 1st result of direct modification is super fast unlocking. For example, a 2.3 GB image file can be unlocked in less than 4 seconds.

    * Zero disk space - The 2nd result of direct modification is that no intermediate disk space is required. In fact, you can unlock a big image file on a SD card or USB connected GPS device directly and quickly.

    * Intact header - The 3rd result of direct modification is that the original header of the image file is preserverd. Thus, timestamps, version number, Mapset name, etc. remain the same.

    * Less memory used - this tools runs happily on Win32 without the need of 3GB switch.

    * Multi-platforms support - this tool is distributed with Windows binaries. But those who prefer to run on Mac or Linux platform can compile the source code by themselves.

    * Ease of use - to unlock, simply drag the image file over the icon of gimgunlock.exe,
    6dkDmJQ
the dragged file will become unlocked. That's all. You can also run it in a command prompt window or batch file by supplying the pathname of the image file as the only argument.

    Spoiler: Original Wuyongzheng's versions&files

    Code:

Download link of gimgtools-0.01 Windows binaries
    Code:

Note: the original binaries above cannot handle image files greater than 2 GB. It is recommended to download the patched version as attached which can unlock any size < 4GB.

Also Note: Gimgunlock assumes the first byte of an IMG file is zero. If not zero, the whole IMG file is protected by a very simple scrambling scheme via XOR (logical eXclusive OR operation). In such case gimgunlock will stop and prompt you to descramble the IMG file by the attached gimgxor.exe first.

these versions cannot unlock City Navigators and Topo Maps PRO IMGs in 2014 devices, and not working with newer devices firmware released since the end of year 2014.

It unlocks NT (not NTU) IMGs in some 2014 devices, but not working with all new devices 2xx9 and probably in most of newer devices firmware */** read note #5
    If you have 2xx7 (8) (PartNumber> 006-B1582-00), works
    If you have 2xx7 (8) (PartNumber> 006-B2077-00), doesn't work.

*NOTE 1: If you updated a 2014 device firmware recently and maps stopped working the only one solution is to downgrade its firmware (if available), because these new devices/firmware have improved checks, NT maps to work must necessarily contain a valid digital signature. (if removed by new gimgunlock+mapsigpatch map wont work)
To rollback see [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
Maps created by MPC with invalid license won't work in these devices.
In zūmo590, GPSMAP64, Edge1000, NT maps unlocked by New gimgunlock-0.03+MapSigPatch will work, Maps with Unicode codepage (65001) won't work.

Some automotive units [eg nuvi 55/56/66/66 with latest issued fw, & others] can also use the following workaround for NTU maps described in the post below.

All I can say is WOW!!!
This tool is AMAZING and IMHO it's the ONLY one to use for unlocking ANY Garmin img file.
So far, it's performance rivals any unlocker I've seen by miles.
On my relic of a PC (P4 2.4GHz w/1.25GB RAM using XP), it unlocked the 2.55GB VUS511L-Boston to Norfolk (13.00) BlueChart g2 Vision img file less than 2 sec.!!!

Hmmm.... now if we could only get someone to develop an unlocking tool that can somehow utilize gimgunlock in unlocking MapSource/.gmap installs....

Gimgunlock can unlock .img files of an old MapSource installation, but not .gmp files of a new MapSource installation. Nevertheless, there is a better and even faster way than gimgunlock to unlock a MapSource installation. And you don't need a new tool to do so. Here are the steps of this little known trick.

[1] Install a locked MapSource product as usual.
[2] Find the pathname of the newly installed .tdb file. If not sure where to find, run MapSource.exe, select "Utilities -> Manage Map Products...", then find the "Installed Location" corresponding to the installed map from the list. The "Installed Location" is the folder containing the .tdb file.
[3] Make a backup copy of the .tdb file found.
[4] Download and extract GarminUnlocker.exe from the post below.
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
[5] Run the following command in a command prompt window to unlock the .tdb file.
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
That's all. The whole MapSource installation is unlocked instantly.

    Features of this unlocking method
    * Super fast unlocking in milli-seconds.
    * No disk space and very little memory used.
    * It unlocks any MapSource installation, regardless of .img or .gmp files.
    * It unlocks any MapID, regardless of unlock code or GMA protected.
    * The unlocked map works with any MapSource.exe version, no patch required,
    * The installed .img or .gmp maps remain intact.
    * The map generated by MapSource.exe via "Transfer -> Send To Device..." is locked. However, it can be unlocked quickly by gimgunlock from post #1.

Moderators, please feel free to add this method to your tutorial section.

WOW indeed. On my 2yo PC (AMD Athlon II x 4 620 2.6GHz, Win7_64, 4 GB RAM) it unlocked GB Discoverer v2 so fast if that i'd blinked i may have missed it. In fact it was so fast i thought i'd mistakenly dragged the already unlocked file onto Gimgunlock, but no, it had just fully unlocked it in little more than a heartbeat.

To really test this out, i copied the locked GB v2 image to my 'toy' netbook (7" Asus Eee pc, XP, Celeron 900MHz and 504MB of RAM (yes, 504MB) and tried unlocking using FIU ... haha FIU choked as expected...hemm..sorry Caty, i mean 'unsurprisingly FIU was unable to complete'. But GBv2 on a 4GB sd together with Gimgunlock.exe, plugged into the netbook was unlocked in 12 seconds on the card. This thing is just freaky fast and so light on resources that it can quickly unlock a 2,595,712KB image file containing large tiles on a card plugged into a toy netbook with less than a half-gig of ram and an under 1GHz processor!! If i hadn't seen it, i wouldn't believe it. The card's in my nuvi now and the map is fully functional. Checked it first with GMapTool as well.
