    @wuddel
Best to try to avoid doing it directly on the device for safety. Safest way is to make a copy of the locked image on your PC hdd or a media card, unlocking it there. You can then check the unlocked image with GMapTool and BaseCamp before transferring to your device, keeping the original locked file as a backup in case something does go wrong (as unlikely as that may be, it's a pain if it does) .

Got Etrex 20 - my first Garmin device so excuse my ignorance here (I've tried to do as much research myself before posting as realistically possible) .

I have the GB Discoverer Topo map (GBDiscoverer50K_All.img 3.1G) : so I've patched gimgunlock.c (taken from GIT) with the #define fseek fseeko line and added relevant flags to CFLAGS in Makefile , recompiled - and I still (it was happening before patching) get error message like this :

    -- snip --
    Invalid argument

Further look with strace shows that it seems to be quite confused when dooing lseek :

    -- snip --
    lseek(3, 131072, SEEK_SET) = 131072
    lseek(3, 131072, SEEK_SET) = 131072
    lseek(3, 131072, SEEK_SET) = 131072
    lseek(3, 18446744072131641344, SEEK_SET) = -1 EINVAL (Invalid argument)

18446744072131641344 is quite a big number - does anyone know what am I doing wrong here ?

To clarify why I think it is locked (maybe it isn't and I need to do something else as well?) :

I can read it fine (no problems at all) in basecamp, but when copied to a blank sd card to Garmin/ directory - Etrex 20 shows 'can't unlock map' error after startup.

Thanks in advance for any clues / suggestions!

To unlock the map simply drag the .img in Gimgunlock.exe (it's in post n1) icon, It works fine.
I cant understand what you want to do more.
To see if a map is locked load the .img in Gmaptool and look at the log.
    Basecamp sees also locked maps.

I was trying to use it under Linux - just installed Windows and used the precompiled binaries from first post as recommended - worked like a charm. Thanks!

    Hi syzygy,

Thanks for this extremely fast unlocker. I used it successfully a couple of times to unlock the Venus China 2012.20 and 2011.40 maps. However when I tried to use it on the CN Europe NT 2013.10 maps, nothing happened. It just gave a flash on the screen but no unlocked maps. Any idea what's wrong?

    Three possibilities:

    1. Did you use the 2009 version of gimgunlock which cannot unlock files > 2GB such as CNE 2013.10? If so, download and use the patched 2012 version from post #1 instead.

    2. Is your CNE 2013.10 already unlocked? If so, gimgunlock will do nothing to it. Try to verify the lock status by GMapTool.

    3. Your map may be corrupted. This is rare though. If so, download the map again.

Lastly, open a command prompt window and run the following command
    full_pathanme_of_gimgunlock full_pathname_of_your_map

Hint: In Windows XP or Windows 7, the command above can be entered easily by (1) drag the icon of gimgunlock.exe to the command prompt window, (2) enter/append a space, (3) drag the icon of your map to the command prompt window.

If there are any error messages shown in the command prompt window, post them here.
