This unlocker is really great. I find it useful to pipe the output of the conversion to a text file so I can see what gimgunlock.exe has done. eg
    gimgunlock.exe imagefile.img > results.txt

This newer build is a lot easier for compiling than the previous builds. However for those who just want binaries, I've attached the i386 linux build of the executables.

    Hi All,

gimgunlock apparently inserts a "levels/zoom" line into each map it's decoding, e.g.:
    levels [17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24], zoom [87,6,5,4,3,2,1,0]

It's not there in locked images, hence wondering why it's needed and if the unlocked images would work w/o it?
Is there any loss of anything at all as a result of inserting it?

    Many thanks in advance.

They do indeed, just curious what particular difference(s) those added lines make. For instance the level of detail seems to stay intact in my experience. On the other hand they must be added for a reason...

This is a key algorithm of Garmin coding. If map is locking the device or program do not read this information! So you do not see levels and zoom info for locked images. There are no other locking data except it!

If you have real interest you must read Garmin format docs and compare locked and unlocked file in HEX viewer. On unlocked map you will see levels and zoom info according specification. On locked map you do not see it in digits and only coded string will be present on that place...

OK, so this data is always there in locked images as well, it's just not displayed by gmaptool as it's encrypted. Unlocking = just decoding this data.

From John Mechalas, Garmin's IMG Format:

If a map is locked, indicated when (0xD)!=0x00 in the subfile header, then the map's level section is encrypted with an unknown algorithm. This renders the map level information essentially unreadable.
    ...
This encryption is obviously to prevent an unauthorized rendering engine from parsing the object hierarchy of the map. Without the zoom levels and the number of subdivisions in each level, it is impossible to know what objects to display, and when.
