Hello. I'm the captain, sea captain. I want to make a reliable navigation system on my ship. But I don't understand anything in electronic navigation systems. I feel comfortable with a paper map and compass in hand. Please, clear to me this is a hi-tech fog. I have a rugged tablet PC IP67 waterproof standard, I want to know what software I should use and what format of map should I buy? I installed the Garmin HomePort but I can't find settings to connect with the built-in my PC the GPS module or configuration to connect other external GPS equipment. Tell me, can I supply a GPS device to a PC and use with the software HomePort? GPS routing with a HomePort on a PC, is that possible? Can I connect the GPS-mouse and charting GPS track through a HomePort? What is ActiveCaptain service? Is there a software product from Garmin that works with meteorological data such as NAVTEX files or GRIB files (the HomePort works)?
Six small questions and a great desire to understand what to do. I hope for your competence and professional guide for me.
    Regards, seaman.

Garmin Homeport is a program that allows captains to plan and manage trips, routes, tracks and waypoints and transfer them between a PC computer and applicable Garmin chartplotter, it doesn't give navigation guidance itself, no GPS routing.

ActiveCaptain gives you a route archive and the ability to grab routes from many thousands of other boaters. There are other features coming with routes on ActiveCaptain too - ways of combining routes with all of the points-of-interest data Active Captain has. It will provide a useful tools for bridge and hazard planning, finding fuel, being alerted about specials enroute, or finding boaters who will be along the same ways.
ActiveCaptain's sharing of routes isn't just between captains. It's also between devices.

Thank you very much for the answer. You really helped me out. It's all clear now as the weather is nice bright morning on the sea. After reading your reply, I stood up and thought, looking to outdoor landscape, and then smiled... Yes, I will try to build a navigation system with the electronic charts by Garmin and HomePort software.
I think that it is possible to do GPS tracking based on a external GPS device and combine it to automatic drawing and marking on the map in realtime within the HomePort software. I have some ideas for this, but since I'm not a programmer, my solution will be simple and aimed at practical result of the work any GPS module of the PC with HomePort software. I hope that everything will work out ... So, now it is only words and ideas, but I intend to work on transformation their ideas into practical things that I need. catymag, thanks for the help.
