xx series nuvis [30/40/50/42/52 etc] support patched Asian JCV. See [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] for the compatibility of various units and syzygy's explanation as to why.

Nothing to be done, other than hope that Garmin changes the firmware for affected models/series such as 2xx0/37x0 and other US/EU fw units, but don't hold your breath!

I've got numerous devises, including 2595, from old StreetPilots right though to a 3597 [need for many different units for testing at times to replicate specific problems by others]. As to which USA version you should buy which can use the patched VJC? Well, that depends on your personal requirements regarding features and budget and so it's too subjective to put a firm recommendation but if you look carefully at the results in Post #29 you'll see that for US/EU firmware models that our current knowledge is limited to xx series [e.g. 30/40/50/42/52/44/54] and 2xx5 [i don't think your friend's 2595 BT function would be any better or worse than any other recent unit, the older units had Parrot bluetooth which is superior imo] and 3490/3590. You could also buy a US/EU 37x0 and convert it to 34x0.

Any Asian firmware unit can display other regions' [patched if required] JCV however.

Regarding PinYin, i think the map has to specifically support that. If you have a map in Chinese only, you cannot use PinYin at all as far as i know regardless of the unit's capabilities. syzygy, Cnfhbr or tom1807 or someone else with particular knowledge maybe will comment more confidently on that.

I would suggest you to buy a Taiwan model instead of US model. That should answer all your questions and needs.

As Neil said, it depends on your personal requirements regarding features and budget. If you just need the basic map features and JCV, the cheaptest new models Nuvi 42 (4.3") and Nuvi 52 (5") should be fine. For more features, see below.

You can shop online. Some, for example pchome.com.tw, can ship to Singapore in 2 to 3 days.

hmm, for example a garmin 50 cost almost twice as much cost, i wonder if the garmin 50 rom of taiwan can be flash to the usa version.
