I don't use it like i didn't use Lifetime Updater, don't want to mess up my device. I have a better idea for Garmin, instead of wasting their time with a useless software like Express they should consider to begin the development of MapSource again, which by the way is a very useful app and unfortunately discontinued ...

It seems that the more experience ppl here are tending to avoid GE. I also don't care that LifetimeUpdater has been superseded by GE. I do think that Garmin's method of killing LU by having a recent version of GE uninstall it is a bit of a worry tho'. I'll be most upset if they do that with MapUpdater or worse just ban it from accessing their servers. I doubt they'll do it for awhile, i guess ....

Sorry to pick this up as it is kinda OT, but again it seems that it's the old hands who think this way about MS. I have never been able to understand why MS was dropped in favour of BC. Maybe it's because I used MS first and became set in my ways, but i don't think so. I'm normally not resistant to change and am keen to look at anything new purely on it's merits. Apart from the ability to read directly from a fully compiled *.img file (which i'm sure they could have easily incorporated into MS anyway), it's hard to see any big advantage BS has over MS. In fact it's quite the opposite for me, i still vastly prefer working with MS.

The very fact that Garmin has not cut MS free is some hope that they may be 'keeping it up their sleeve', just in case. It's either that or they are just taking a dog in the manger attitude and saying if we're not developing it then no one else can. If it's never going to be developed or supported again by Garmin, they should release the source code and let someone who cares play around with it.

Let's hope they don't let MU wither on the vine like MS.

I love MS , like a lot of poeple I start with it and and get familiar . Now I use BC some time and start to like it. The only thing better to MS is 3D ,adventure, link to Google Earth. BC is better for topo , more option but for road map, MS is simple, easy to use.

I agree, this is not the place to discuss the relative merits of MS & BC and i apologise for taking the OT up, but it was in the context of comparing the history of MS/BC with what's now happened with LifetimeUpdater/Garmin Express. In that respect the mention of the other (MS) experience is relevant in that not only have they have done it again with LU (but who cares anyway?) but more importantly it's been done with undue haste this time by not only KILLING off LU before GE is properly developed, but by using GE as the executioner.

So really, how many other ppl are:
    (i) uneasy about the way GE is being used to take over LM handling but maybe for the future also all maps, FW updates & SW downloading? Do you think we will see the end of MapUpdater, WebUpdater & My Dashboard?
    OR
(ii) happy with GarminExpress and don't mind having a 'one-stop shop' approach to all things Garmin, where in one go you can update firmware, maps, vehicles, voices etc etc.?

Me to I apologise, this is not the place to discuss the relative merits of MS & BC but I think They should wait and devlope GE a bit more before relese it , and dont stop MS. GE would be great if we can update maps , firmware , ... , make real backup , change voice ,car, lock screen , ... not just from Garmin Garage ,by other places to . I think Garmin want us to pay for LM use GE and stay with that , that it , that all !!!

GE Backup is very Good for using before and After Hard-Reset. (Saves a lot of time)
It puts back POI, Favourites, Routes(Trips), and SQLite Database.
I'm using it a lot purely and only for that function.
Warning (Make sure your device is in Mass storage Mode for Backup and Restore)
The Firmware and Extras Update also seems to be working fine as of the latest revision.
For Map Updates I would still stick to GarminMapUpdaterXXX.EXE (GE does not give you a full Mapsource install as yet, please correct me if I'm wrong !)

Garmin Express should have been released as a beta software followed with the proper warning for all users to know that it can cause problems with their devices. Instead of that Garmin has been advertising this new unstable product together with the release of 2013 series ...

Furthermore i believe that Garmin shouldn't continue developing to many apps together, like Express or BaseCamp and so on, but to join developers to create one app that has it all, a Garmin Suite if i may give a name to it.

So they are now giving actual change logs. Perhaps it is now out of 'unofficial beta phase'.
