    Correct ! The index file is built at install time by Mapsource or Mapinstall (use Mapinstall for all Maps after 2012)

    When Mapinstall asks for GPS plug in a flash drive or Memory Card! (preferably empty)!

    Or use the patched version of MapInstall 4.0.3 and you can create the img file on to your hard drive and do not need your GPS or usb flash drive hooked up. I wasn't aware that the address search function won't work with a shrunken img file. Where did you read that?

    OK, so therefore rendog33, if you shrink the size of the map with MapInstall by not including every single map in North America but only include certain areas then the address search function will still work the same so go ahead and do it.

    I downloaded a patched Mapinstall 4.0.3 but when I click the .exe it says "Mapinstall could not find installed products"

    Where did you place the "City Navigator North America NT 2014.20.gmap" folder? In Windows 7, it usually goes into "C:\Program Data\Garmin\Maps\". Use the Protected Garmin File Toolkit program downloaded from this site. Click the MapSource tab at the top. You probably do not see the North American map in the list. Click the "Select an XML file within the gmap folder and update the registry" button. Navigate to where you placed the "City Navigator North America NT 2014.20.gmap" directory. Choose the Info.xml and click open. Then the North America maps will appear in the list. If in the list the status says "Locked", then click the "Unlock ALL Locked TDB" button. Now the maps should appear in the MapInstall program.

    If you had download the PC Install version of the North American maps from here, and if you double-click the "CNNANT2014_20Update.msi" file then it will install the before mentioned City Navigator North America NT 2014.20.gmap folder into the correct location. I believe it also updates the registry so when you run the Protected Garmin File Tookit program it will already be in the list. You should still unlock the map by clicking the Unlock ALL Locked TDB" button. That .msi installer also installs the programs Basecamp and Mapinstall but the Mapinstall that is installed is not the patched version.

    You need to instal the official MapInstall program, and then replace the MapInstall.exe with the patched file. Or use [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] which will do it for you and save the original exe as BAK.

    EDIT: This all started because you couldn't put the entire NA image onto a 2GB SD rendog33? My complete NA LM image is ~1.88GiB, and usually a [so-called] 2GB SD has ~1.84GiB of usable space. If you don't select AK and a bit of CAN or ditch parts of MX and/or the Caribbean etc you can bring the image under 1.84GiB with MapInstall probably. Certainly all the US and Canada will be well under 1.84 anyway.

    I find that the patched MapInstall.exe will run standalone without installing the entire basecamp/mapinstall official program. As long as there is a PC Install version of the map installed and its location is in the registry (can add it using the Protected Garmin Toolkit program), then the MapInstall.exe program will run and find the maps.

    @zajacz
    The guy's already struggling so why not just give him the easiest option. I didn't say you were wrong, I simply gave him an even easier way imo. Caty is right btw, if new users searched a bit more before posting we wouldn't end up with all these quasi-OT posts polluting map threads. The EU 2014.20 map's only been released a few days ago officially and the thread is already over 8 pages, a lot of which probably needs to be cleaned out [including this post].
