I totally agree with you. I am suspicious of any sort of "Automated" program. Especially if there is any chance it going to be snooping around you computer.

With all the great members of this forum, you know almost immediately when an update comes out.

I see many advantages of using Garmin Lifetime Updater. The most important is that I can have as many GarminDevice.xml files as I want stored directly on the hard drive and download maps for all of the corresponding units. It runs manually or automatically at scheduled times, whatever you prefer in the settings.

With Map Updater you can only connect to one USB or Virtual USB drive and check for map updates. Then you have to swap media (GarminDevice.xml) for the next download. By using Lifetime Updater you can have everything stored in one place and don't have to keep track of device files. I don't use MapUpdater other than for Garmin-Asus or Asian map downloads all other downloads are much easier with Lifetime Updater.

I see the advantages of the updater.

But it still doesn't override my resistance to allow Garmin, or anyone else, to dig inside my computer.

I used it three times and three times failed, first and second time downloaded a corrupted map, third time it disconnected in the middle of the download showing an error , it was slower than Mapupdater too.
I dont like it starts with Windows and naturally I disabled this feature.
But I havent tested newest version after I've read on other forums it still had these problems and bugs.

In that case you shouldn't use Garmin Map Updater either that collects a lot of data from installed maps and used unlock keys etc.
Running Garmin Lifetime Updater or Garmin Map Updater in a very clean and lean Virtual Machine gives just the info about what the software can read from the used GarminDevice.xml files.

Avoid that Garmin Lifetime runs at start-up by removing the Windows Registry key that starts the application.

Example of Run key for Windows 64-bit (remove the "Wow6432Node\" path if you have 32-bit Windows):

I was unaware that Garmin collects Data with a map update. I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

But I still get a feeling the data collected with the Map Updater is less than is collected than if you give them "permission" to collect Data when using a Beta.

I can't say one way or the other, it's just a gut feeling.

This program work with Garmin device only!
In two words! When you connect your device to PC, the program makes the inquiry to Garmin update server and check for Lifetime status of device. So it works if only your device (or rather ID of it) have this status in force.

Default How to load maps directly to an SD card during a map update

The most recent versions of the Garmin Map Updater for Onetime updates and the Garmin Lifetime Updater
now offer the ability to install mapping to an SD card if your device does not have enough space to fit the
    maps in the internal memory.

The SD card installation option will only appear when you are updating a compatible device that does not
have sufficient internal space for the selected map region. When notified that the device doesn't have
sufficient space, you may either install mapping to an SD card or view additional installation options. At this
point the application will indicate how much free space will be required to install the selected region on an SD
    card.
