Default Garmin Portable Apps - MapSource, MapInstall, MapConverter, BaseCamp & HomePort

Garmin Portable Apps - MapSource, MapInstall, MapConverter, BaseCamp & HomePort

These have been tested on WinXP SP3 and they should also work on Win7 32-bit & 64-bit.

The portable apps were made individually with the VMware ThinApp.
The main purpose for their use (and why they're "portable") is because they can all be run from USB/"Removable Disk" type drives.
    Versions are MapSource 6.16.3, MapInstall 3.14.4, BaseCamp 3.1.3, MapConverter 2.1.1 & HomePort 2.0.4.
Except for HomePort, all of them are patched/special that allow you to also send maps to any drive.
There is a "Global Basemap" built into the "BaseCamp.exe" & "HomePort.exe" files (and added to "MapSource.exe" as well).
You may need to install the Garmin USB drivers to the host PC if using Garmin devices with these portable apps.
WinXP SP3 (or later) with Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is required.
These portable apps do not need admin rights to run.

When these portable apps are run, a "Thinstall" folder will be created on the host PC in the location below:
    %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Thinstall
Each app will create it's own sandbox folder within the "Thinstall" folder above.

    Four maps are included.
The .gmap folder maps are unlocked and the .img files are locked (BaseCamp & HomePort inherently display locked .img maps).

When the downloaded archive is extracted, a "Garmin" directory will contain the folder & files as shown in the pic below.
Put this "Garmin" folder at the root of any "Removable Disk" type drive.
If you do not, the compatible .img files for BaseCamp & HomePort will not display.

"MapSource.exe" & "BaseCamp.exe" display the .gmap maps located in the included "Maps" directory.

The "BaseCamp.exe" has MapInstall embedded within it (the included "MapInstall.exe" file is separate from that).
With "BaseCamp.exe" running, the embedded MapInstall can be used as below:
    Devices>All Data (right-click)>Install Maps

"MapSource.exe", "MapConverter.exe", "BaseCamp.exe" & "MapInstall.exe" will display compatible maps that are installed in the host PC.

"MapConverter.exe" (for Windows) will detect if there are compatible maps installed on the host PC and can convert them to the .gmapi folder format.
It will send these converted maps to any location.
There will be a .gmap folder within the created "Map Name.gmapi" folder.
Cut/Paste the .gmap folder to the portable apps "Maps" folder.
Then you can delete the .gmapi folder.

These portable apps do not save their settings, preferences, toolbar settings, window size, etc... to the USB/"Removable Disk" type drive.
On the first run of another host PC they will always start-up the same way.
For speed and performance reasons, everything is written to the host PC that's needed for the apps to run.
Therefore, a "Delete Garmin Portable Apps Data from PC.exe" file is also included so users can to delete data from the "Thinstall" folder of the host PC if they wish.
Two options are given... "KEEP USER SETTINGS/DATA FILES" & "DELETE ALL GARMIN PORTABLE APPS DATA".
Option 1 would still save all user files such as settings, preferences, toolbar settings, window size, BirdsEye files, and other data of small filesize.
This option just deletes non-essential data, as well as the TitleCache files the eat-up drive space.
The CardProductCache & ProductDataCache for BaseCamp & HomePort are still saved so they don't have to reload everytime the app is re-run.
This shortens their startup time when the same devices and maps are still available for the portable apps to use again.
Option 2 will "DELETE ALL GARMIN PORTABLE APPS DATA" within the "Thinstall" folder.
Therefore, everything will revert back to the same settings etc... as when the portable app was first run on a host PC.
The %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Thinstall folder will still remain.

For "MapSource.exe", all downloads below will only include an English help file (MapSource.chm).

    Garmin Portable Apps v1.00 (English Only).rar (118MB):
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Garmin Portable Apps v1.00 (English, French, German, Italian & Spanish).rar (132MB):
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

In the below link, HomePort only supports the 5 languages above.

I wonder if it would be possible to install these portable apps in the SD card inside my Oregon device? Then I would always be able to run the apps on whichever Windows PC I plug my device in. And the map files would be accesible from both the GPS itself and the applications.

These applications are nicely used with a virtual disk as explained in this post: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    Well done.

    FWIW
With thinstalled portable apps I always add a "Thinstall" folder to the same folder as the app. All data is then written to the USB drive.
This can slow down operation if installed on a flash drive but at least it is 100% portable.
To erase all cache, data and reset defaults simply delete all files in the "Thinstall" folder.

    Nice work, thanks!
And good package for My...with Lithuania map - Lietuva Topo.
But I have one big problem...
Work good on the Windows 7
But don't work with Windows Vista (servise pack 2). I dont have Administrator rights on the laptop with Windows Vista and can't install other Garmin mapsource program...
Maybe You can make other alternative package, who work with Windows Vista...

Additional maps are loaded by basecamp but ignored by Mapsource. Even the preloaded maps are not shown in Mapsource.

Please provide additional details of the problems you are having using the MapSource portable app.
What map names are you defining as being the "Additional maps" and as the "preloaded maps"?
    Which download are you using?

When the downloaded .rar file is extracted, the folders & files structure must remain as they are shown in the attached image.
If you changed the folder and/or file structure of them, the included Mapsource compatible maps will not load (or be seen) with MapSource.
There are only 2 MapSource compatible maps included ("Lietuva TOPO V1.11 NT (Lithuania).gmap" & "SCG Route 2.40 NT (Serbia=Montenegro)").
MapSource should display only those 2 and the "Global BaseMap".
The "Global Basemap" is included within MapSource.exe as originally described.

Even if all other files and folders are deleted from the extracted .rar file, the MapSource.exe should still display the "Global Basemap".
MapSource does not recognise .img maps.

I extracted the rar in the root of my C: with folder structure the same of the rar. I made a shortcut of the folder on my desktop.

It only shows Global Basemap. None of the two other and my additional are shown. All are shown in Basecamp instead.

    Hope this helps

    Again....What download are you using?
As stated in the OP, "Put this "Garmin" folder at the root of any "Removable Disk" type drive."
That's how these portable apps were configured to run.
If MapSource is (or ever was) locally installed on that C: drive, conflicts may occur.
Extract the .rar file to the root of a portable drive and run the MapSource.exe from there (from a PC that does not have MapSource installed locally).
Is the "Roads of Russia 5.22 FID 1868" map a .gmap folder located in the same location as the "Lietuva TOPO V1.11 NT (Lithuania).gmap" & "SCG Route 2.40 NT (Serbia-Montenegro).gmap" folders.

If you extracted the .rar file to the root of C:, you have the below then... correct?
    C:\Garmin\MapSource.exe
    C:\Garmin\Maps\Lietuva TOPO V1.11 NT (Lithuania).gmap
    C:\Garmin\Maps\SCG Route 2.40 NT (Serbia-Montenegro).gmap
C:\Garmin\Maps\Roads of Russia 5.22.gmap (your additional map)

Is MapSource locally installed on that PC as well?

How may the fact the drive is non-removable affect it?

    It never was.

No, it was installed with the tool created by gmaptool from an unlocked img.
