By the effect (problem) you're seeing...
These portable apps were made to be run from USB/removable drives only.
They were created for those of us that want to run the same Garmin apps on several PC's without having to install the same apps again on all the PC's.
If you want to run them from a C: drive on one PC, why not just do the full MapSource install as one normally would?

That's another reason why portable MapSource won't work with that map...
Portable MapSource won't work with non-gmap type maps.
It will only look for .gmap type maps in "X:\Garmin\Maps" ("X:" being a removable/USB type drive) or "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\GARMIN\Maps" of the host PC (where the newer .gmap NT type maps are put from a normal MapSource map install).
You should be able to use portable MapConverter (run from a removable/USB type drive) to make "Roads of Russia 5.22" (that was installed with GMapTool) compatible with portable MapSource (as described in the OP), by making a .gmap folder of it, and then putting that folder into "X:\Garmin\Maps" ("X:" being a removable/USB type drive) or "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\GARMIN\Maps" of the host PC.

Because I don't have one to upgrade.

There's no other choice to install it because there is no mapsource version of that map.

It doesn't explain why it works in basecamp, though, or why the bundle maps don't show...
    Thanks anyway.

Sorry, I don't understand that answer...
    "one" what? and "upgrade" what?

    OK

    Thanks anyway.
BaseCamp (as well as HomePort) are very different applications.
Especially in the way that Garmin configured them to read where/how maps are installed.
A normal MapSource install utilizes the registry entries to locate the map install location.
Portable MapSource does not do that, and instead uses the .gmap folder locations on the removable/USB drive ("X:\Garmin\Maps") and/or "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\GARMIN\Maps".
BC & HP both use WinSxS (side by side) Microsoft VC90 runtimes (that were included within their portable builds) and Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is required on the host PC for those portable apps to run at all.
BC & HP utilize a more modern method of application design vs. MapSource (which is still more old-school).
It's speculated that in time, MapSource will cease from being updated by Garmin, and in the future BaseCamp will be the only Garmin supported app to read non-BlueChart type maps.

As I explained before, "These portable apps were made to be run from USB/removable drives only".
The bundled maps don't show with portable MapSource because you're running it from a local disk/fixed drive.
Although BaseCamp still does so because of the reason explained above.

    The bottom-line is...
If you use these Garmin portable apps in the way that the were intended to be used, they will work fine.
If not, you will have some problems.

As far as I know, Mapsource can only be upgraded online, but not downloaded as first installation setup.

Here is how you can do a first installation setup of MapSource....

(Taken from the info. of post #6 in [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].)

    1. Using "Notepad.exe", make a .reg file with the below:
    Code:

    2. Save it as "MapSource Install.reg" and run it.
    3. Download Garmin's MapSource software updater from below:
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
    4. Run "MapSource_6163.exe".

    Done....

This forum is a great source of info, if one knows where to find it.
I find that the info are too widely spread and hardly recovered, unless one monitors all threads on all forums.

    Thanks WknThDg

Back on track. Thanks for the info, but it doesn't work. Unable to register the reg file.

The message is something like: "Unable to import <file>. The specified file is not a System register script. "

EDIT: I found the problem with the file encoding. Ok, now I installed the mapsource, just to find the next problem when launching mapsource: "Wrong dll language file".

    What language is your OS?
What path is the installed MapSource.exe file located?
The language files (.dll files) should have been installed into the same location as MapSource.exe.
See the thread below (post #5 has a link to download the language files with instructions):
