    Turboccc – I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this program of yours. I have been looking for a program to add a POI Icon to the “Where to” menu of the GPS for years. I don’t believe Garmin’s Content Toolkit can even do that. Don’t know where anyone can find the time to create a program like EPE in his spare time.
    A few things I’m not sure about (and I’ve read through this thread):
    1. Have you been able to confirm what the maximum number of extra icons in the “where to” menu of the GPS is? I don’t seem to be able to create more than one on my zümo 660.
    2. I’m not sure if I understand your response to an earlier question in this regard: Normally, with POI Loader, custom POI’s (e.g. “GPS Dealers.gpx”) show up under Where To > Extras > Custom POIs > GPS Dealers. If the POI file is however created with Content Toolkit, is shows up one level higher on the GPS, i.e. Where To > Extras > GPS Dealers. The question is, is it possible to accomplish the latter with EPE (i.e. so that EPE created POI shows up under Extras and not Extras > Custom POI)? If not, could you perhaps add that functionality?
    3. Lastly, I’ve not been able to figure out when one would click neither “Emulate POI Loader”, nor “Alternate “Where To” Icon Format” in the programs preferences.
    Thanks again for the excellent program.

    I’ve got another question: If, when creating the GPI to appear directly in the “Where To”, is it possible to create categories? E.g. Where To > Touch “Dealers” icon > List comes up e.g. “GPS”, “New Vehicles”, “Used Vehicles etc. Next touch “GPS” and the list of dealers comes up. Thanks.

    @949BFN,

    1- The number of Where-To icons seems to be 1 or 2 depending on the GPS used.
    2- Good point. If GPI Creator can put it in the first level of Extras, EPE should be able to do the same. I'll keep this in mind.
    3- Emulate POI Loader means it will put the POI in the Extra/Custom POIs. Otherwise, it will put the icon in the Where-To menu. When using the Where-To format, the icon format may be disserent depending onthe GPS used. If your custom POI Where-To icon looks bad (garbled or with bad color), try to check the Alternate Icon format and sage to a .gpi again. That should fix the Where-To icon colors.
    4- Yes you can. If you use EPE and try to "File->Export as Category" or "Export as Symbol", ... This will automatically create categories under the Where-To icon menu. Same thing if you use Emulate POI Loader: it will create categories under Extras/Custom POIs. Of course, you need to have set the Category (or Symbol) fields in your POIs.

    N.B. I am glad you found some use for EPE. I probably spent 1000 hours on it over the past 18 months (learning and coding). I learned a lot of things and I am happy to share the result with everybody. I really think a good POI editor was a missing link in Garmin's portfolio of products. When I got my first GPS 2 years ago, I was disapointed by the fact that most POI files contained only coordinates. I wanted to add the complete address, opening hours, cost for visit and other relevant information. Since I cound not find any free POI Editor, I made EPE for that purpose. Then, people started to ask for features and little by little I added them. The result is the current EPE.

    Thank you for your feedback.

    Me again. I wonder if you could help me. I managed to create a GPI file showing in the Where To menu, with custom icon. But for some or other reason, I’m unable to get the map icons to show up on the GPS. If I use the same icon.bmp file with POI Loader, the bmp is shown as the map icon on the GPS, so I believe my bmp is fine. (24x 24, 96DPI), but no matter what I try, I cannot get EPE to add the icons to the GPI file.
    To create the GPI file, I have the following file structure / files:
    C:\POI\Legal\ and in this folder, I have “Legal.bmp” and “Legal.gpx”. Legal.gpx contains waypoints assigned to 4 different categories. Legal.bmp is an icon of the well known legal scales I created myself. (And as I say, it works fine with POI Loader). If I understand the help file and the posting on the first page of this thread correct, the icon bmp should be in the same folder as the gpx file, with the exact same name – just as with POI Loader in other words.
    C:\POI\WhereToIcons\ and in it Legal1.bmp and Legal2.bmp. Just to be save, I also put a copy of Legal.bmp in this folder.
    Path to GPI file Icons points to C:\POI\WhereToIcons and Mapsource Custom Symbal Path to C:\POI\WhereToIcons.
    For some or other reason I’ve not been able to figure out the past 2 hours, the map displays a small green dot as the waypoint icon instead of the legal scales icon.
    Any idea what I’m missing?

    Turbo - The problem seems to be the format of my bmp, but I can't figure out what. Strange thing is that bmps which work with POI Loader, do not work with EPE.

    I need to test. I presume you currently have a 16-bit or 24-bit bitmap. For now, try to use a 256-color bitmap for the map icon.

    Details of the 2 bmps I experimented with:

    Legalold.bmp works with POI Loader, but not EPE.
    Legal.bmp works with EPE.

    Next challenge Turbo (i.e. for me!):
    Is is possible to assign icons per category, as opposed to per gpx file. E.g. Legal.gpx contains the waypoints. Waypoints are divided in categories "High Courts", "Magistrate's Courts". Is it possible to assign an icon to the High Court category and another different icon the the Magistrate's Court category?

    @949BFN,

    4-bit color depth? That is 16 colors. Try 8-bit color depth (256 colors). I have to check all the conversions when I have a bit more time, but I think I support 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit bitmaps. I know some GPS will only support some type of bitmap. My 3750 only supports 256 colors or the bitmap will not show. I need also to check what POI Loader does, but I think it does no conversions.

    Right now, if you Export by Category or Symbols (or even filename), you can have one map symbol per category. Just make sure the bitmap is 256 colors (see point above) and that it has the same name as the category (or symbols or filename) and put it in the same folder as the source POI.
