ok i followed the instructions. Think im making some progress. I now have the img unlocker and my map file on the SD disk. I put it into the gps and no go. Am i missing a step? How do i "run" the application. thought that was what i was doing by puting it into the gps?

Windows software means that you run the application in Windows OS (Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP etc.). Then the "gmapsupp.img" file is unlocked you copy that unlocked version back to the memory card or the GPS unit.
It's possible to connect the SD card to your PC and run the Fast IMG Unlocker directly in your "[SD-card]:\Garmin" directory. But in that case you would should make sure that you have a backup in case of some errors.

OMG i must be an idiot! When i click on the file it says windows can not open this file without knowing what program created it. I think im chasing my tail. is there a thread for dummies? Guess im lost

I do not have the map program on my computer just on a sd that came with my other gps unit.

Got any ideas for the computer illiterate?

I'm not sure what you're doing. You have to extract the application first from the RAR-archive. Have you used WinRAR, WinZIP, 7-zip (7-zip is FREE) or any other tool to expand the downloaded RAR package? That's normal for most distributions here to be compressed into one download file. Large files (> 200 MiB) are often split to several parts to fit the uploading hosts requirements.

    Some compression & extraction tools:

Ok now it is making more sense. i need to down load the zip file first?

well downloaded the zip file, ran it. After about ten minutes the window closed and all that was left was two files like link #1 said. Put the card into my gps and still not working. do i need to use the zip on the map file too?
